My experience.
The front shocks on my '97 2WD were original when I bought it. It had 168,000 miles. One was pretty loose, but the other one was in fair shape. Really nice quality, large diameter piston rod, large diameter shock body, etc.
I bought some Napa Response shocks for the front (same as Monroe blue) and they had a smaller diameter piston rod and smaller shock body. They were softer than the 168,000 mile shocks that I just took off the truck. So I took those back and jumped up to the Napa Reflex (same as Monroe Reflex). These have a pretty beefy piston rod and a large shock body, just like OE. They were about $44 each. They ride pretty stiff (though they may not be broken in yet), but they do soften for large blows. They'rea good shock.

I replaced mine and ended up going with the Rough Country shocks. They are basically a generic Rancho that is made in the same factory using the same specs as Rancho. They can be purchased at JCWhitney, but I called RC and they beat the JCW price, so I ended up paying like $32 each and that's with shipping. I was suprised at the ride quality, if you are going to do any extreme offroading I would prob go with a higher quality, but these work great for a stock replacement. Here's the link http://www.roughcountry.com/shocks_rc9000.htmlmake sure to ask them to match or beat the JCW price.
Good Luck
