Hello all.
Recently we purchased a 02 intreped with the 3.2. The car started having some problems that we did not notice before. We purchased 3 of these cars from an auction and drove them home and all 3 where working fine. The car we are having problems with has just been sitting a few days with a dead battery. We boosted the car off and it started right up. The problem we just encountered for the first time was the gauges would work for a few seconds then stop. The odometer would stop displaying milage and read out "NO BUS". you could kill the engine and recrank the car and the gauges would work for about 30 seconds or so then quite and read no bus agin.Ive looked around the forums and found a few threads on the NO BUS problem, but it was in the truck forums. I read that it could be the circut board behind the guages or possibly the pcm going out. Will this theory hold true for the Intreped as well ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A "BUS" is a computer term.  It is a set of wires that many signals can go through...not hard wired between only two destinations.  It's kind of like a highway, you can get on or off at many locations.

The BCM controls the gauges, bells, and whistles (ha), but needs data from the PCM.  That data, if you have been following, comes via the bus.

No BUS means either a bad PCM (out put side and I also think this is where the bus controler resides...that's like the clock pulse and stuff), a bad BCM, or loose/dirty/broken wires.

I'd have to say though, it sounds like one of the computers if it is going out after a while and then comes back when you restart, however it may be weak voltage (or ground) causing an intermitant problem.

Hope this helped,
Kurt
