1998 Dodge Avenger Sport V6 2.5L

Last week when I was driving home from school my avenger was acting very strange. After a minute of being on the highway the car shutoff engine power and it was coasting for probably 5 seconds before it went from 0 rpm back to 3000 or so. Then around ten minutes later it was jerking (not like a misfire) but like kinda like off an on accelerating, it did this for a good 3 minutes meanwhile the car seemed like it was restarting itself (brake, cruise control and eventually CEL lit were all cycling on and off with the jerking). Then a couple of minutes later the rpm's dropped to 0 for around 10 to 15 seconds twice. After all that it drove home normally, all with half a tank of gas.

The next day  (around 16 hours later) It wouldn't start without a fight. When I did get it started I revved the rpms and it did so, but it would not idle. I tried backing out but the car shutoff and refused to start again.

Come today I decide to try it for kicks (I need to fix it but dont really want to), It starts normally on the first attempt, I can hear the fuel pump hum and a relay click in the front just like normal. It was idling at 900rpms for a minute and then I shut it off.  I have not tried to drive it yet though.

What could be wrong this time?

It is at 166,000 miles right now. Fuel filter was replaced about a year ago which would be 18,000 miles. Probably unrelated but it also developed an overheating problem before that where it would overheat at idle after driving but would cool down if I held it above 2000 rpm.

first have someone check the battery.i had the battery go bad in my blazer and it did the same thing.also check the ground wire where it connects to the body and engine make sure they tight.also check the wires on the starter.as far as overheating it sounds like the radiator is plugged up.

ive been reading alot of these forums because i just bought an avenger for 500 bucks and wanted to know what to expect. Ive seen alot about the fuel pump intermittently shutting off and on. Do you have a fuel pressure tester and if you do have you tested the pressure at the rail?

It can be an intermittant fuel pump relay , intermittant CPS or ASD relay
