that word be a good start, and the best thing u could do is do a port and polish on the head, along with a big came and valves, and valvesprings..... that u would see the best power range out of it..

I would start with a cai, new header, bored out tb, and lightened pulleys.

Weight reduction? I see this floating around a lot. Since when was a neon heavy? It is probably just my point of view, but when you get faster, that will make traction an issue, and having weight helps with that. That is why the performance model of a car is heavier than the base. There are other ways to address the issue ( like going with a 2.4L) but you seem like you are looking for cheap power. Most are any way.

1.Look for an Iceman intake, or make a Cold Air Intake or CAI from a 3.0L chrysler car. There are links around.

2. Look on ebay for a Megan under driver pulley for the crank shaft. This will free up some horsepower. There are many different brands. I went with the Af/x since I got a good deal on it, but I hear the TTI udp is the best. By how much who knows, and i doubt it is worth the cost. Could be wrong though.

3. Dump the stock manifold and get a header. What kind? A Long Tube Header or a mid length? What to buy? I went with this:

Stainless steel means it never rusts, plus I had waned it for years. I made a huge difference in my neon, and a 1/3 the cost of most dohc lth's. Mine was $86 shipped and took a week to arrive.

There is more but keep in mind your suspension and brakes are what keeps that power under control. Address them first is my advice.

you've obviously never ridden in a weight reduxed car.  A buddy of mine has a dohc 1g all motor car that dynod 50 more ponies than my all motor car.  He also has an r/t tranny and I have a 3:55.  He gutted about 300 lbs out of the car and he gets WAY better traction off the line now.  This is an even bigger factor on a FWD car that is "dragging" weight rather than pushing it.  Not to mention...every bit you can loose increases your power to weight ratio!  What difference does it make that a neon is already light.

Oh but I have. I beat him too. Not saying much, since his driving skills were not impressive. What mods does your friend's r/t have? A decently or mildly modded dohc should make short work of a lightly modded sohc. Especially with the r/t trans. Buying off ebay is not as sketchy as it used to be. Maybe performance parts are being reproduced and sold for more affordable prices. I would not get a turbo off there, but I spoke to a few people that were using this header and they had no bad reports. People claimed it was chrome and would flake off. Nonsense. Nothing against modern at all, but the Megan udp on ebay does the job just fine for a budget racer. Got my sts (Short Throw Shifter) over ebay for about $30, and later bought a B&M STS from a local. Still in package. There were IDENTICAL in size and weight, but priced $70 apart.Go figure.

I have a dohc and my traction off the line is becoming an issue. What tires is he using? My car breaks loose WAY too much in the rain for my taste. Perhaps its time for better tires. When a car gets too light on a poor suspension at high speeds, you run a good chance of loosing control. That is the difference. Every mod presents a downside. Ever been going too ast when the wind gets under ya in a turn? I have, and the neon I had crushed. What all did he remove to get 300lbs out of a neon?

yes, his car is quite a bit faster than mine *WAS*   and I'm not saying that weight redux is the best option for a DD.  My point is that weight reduction does not sacrifice traction.  His car had lower gears and more power, so he should have had more traction problems than I did.  BUT NO, he had VERY VERY good traction.  He also had 185 tires and I had 215's

His car has crane 18's, longtube header, amm intake and a 60 mm TB,

mine *had*  headman shorty header, mpp computer, 52 mm tb, msd, udp, cat delete, APEXi Neo Gen, K&N air intake

well, when i did my head, i put a mopar cam in it 6hp...  or u could go with a crane.. either one good cams, as for the springs and valves, i went with a little bigger valve, and titanim valve springs.... the titanium springs are stonger than stock,   so the valves will not float...   my head is great, i love it, it has HUGE ports, and i really saw a differnce with that....  but it can be very pricey to do... but drivability will not be effected at all.. will be as realiable as the day u bought it as long as the person doing the work knows what he is doing

sorry if it does not make sence or spelling sucks, i am exhausted

Why not add power and forget about the weight? Of course, you'll get to a point with the sohc where it cost more to use it than to get a dohc and make more. This would further reduce or eliminate the need to remove your interior, unless that is the look you want. It is alwyas fun to beat a gutted car. Really makes then look like they did something wrong in their setup.
