ORIGINAL: thestealth ... a Vette with its skip shift will net nearly 28mpg, STi's and Evo's with their high output 4 bangers barely (if at all) get that kind of mileage. Vette owner's disable the skip shift before they get their cars home from the dealership. It only helps with city driving anyway. The good highway mileage is actually due to the two overdrives. In real life, my kids get around 24 mpg on the highway in their STIs. My wife gets 26 mpg in her WRX wagon. That seems pretty close to me. The efficiency of the OHC engines far outweigh any weight increase or weight imbalance. Besides, we're not talking about hundreds of pounds here. Most of these heads use aluminum and carbon fiber parts. Also, there are a lot of engineering tricks to make up for any weight imbalances. An EVO has an OHC engine, try cornering with one of them. Remember, Ford is getting 300 hp out of 4.6L, naturally aspirated. You have to admit, that's impressive. Ford has been into OHC engines since the early 60s. They had to to try and run with the Hemis and Max Wedges. The SOHC 427 is a rare and valuable engine that ran in the Thunderbolts. Thunderbolts were the only cars that could even try and run with the Super Stock Mopars in the mid 60s. The bottom line is that whether you like Mopar, GM, Ford or imports, it's a great time to be a gearhead!

Thanks for posting the pics. Looks like the GT40 had several engine options including the cammer.
