Ok so I am looking at buying a 1999 Dodge Durgano 5.2L V8 2wd. I believe it had over 100,000 miles (im waiting for the owner to reply back with the mileage). How much horsepower do these things have and what kind of gas mileage do they get? I have a 94 Camaro Z28 that get 17city and 23hwy but runs premium gas so around that kind of gas mileage under regular would be nice. I was also wondering what I should look for in these cars as far as runability is concerned. Here is whats included in the ad. quote:
Clean Title! -Green outside / tan inside (leather) -Seats 8 adults comfortably (3rd row seating) -2WD and very well maintained just had a major service (belts / rear end / oil / air filters / cabin filter / etc. -All power options work GREAT ! ! -A/C Blows COLD ! ! -Has Sony CD/MP3 Player -Mechanically sound! Drives perfect! -Brand new rear tires! -Complete engine back dual flow master exhaust (sounds great) Videos: http://s24.photobucket.com/albums/c9/specc/?action=view¤t=MOV02499.flv http://s24.photobucket.com/albums/c9/specc/?action=view¤t=MOV02498.flv

Take it to a shop and have them do a good look over. Most shops will charge you about $40 for the _____point inspection. (not sure on the shop) This is money well spent. The 5.2L is a good motor. I don't know the gas mileage on the 2wd but the 4X4 is about 11-13 city and 13-17 hwy. It depends on the gearing, and trans. If I were you, I'd go for the year 2000 and up because they include OBII into their computer. These are not known to save any gas.

Spartan: +2 on Hydra's comments. IIRC, the 5.2 is rated at 235 hp. When you check it over, pay particular attention to the front suspension parts. Durangos are known for worn ball joints, wheel bearings, and such. From the pics, looks like a pretty nice ride. Don

+3 for Hydra. The 5.2 is rated at 220 HP back in 99 and 230 HP in 2000. I personally think it may have been 235 but it may have been a marketing gimmick for Dodge to push their sale of the 4.7's rated at 235 HP when it was introduced for the Durango in 2000. If you can confirm that everything is mechanically sound on the 99 model, you should be okay, the most common issues that I have seen posted to this forum for the 99 owners is the no start problem which commonly the problem is the 100 amp fuse. Also, the 99 models will not fall under the ball joint recall so make sure those are in good shape. I also recommend getting a 2000 model if given the opportunity. The 2000 model as Hydra stated comes with the OBDII computer, but it has additional chnage that the 2000 model has Rack and Pinion steering vs the 98-99 recirculating ball joint. If you go with the 2001-2003 model, You will get a refreshed redesigned interior layout. Also, you should not buy a Durango if you are worried about gas mileage. Average 2WD durangos with 4.7's/5.2's average around 16 mpg combined. Only a very few durango owners ever reported their gas mileage exceeding 20+ (Wished I was one of them). I wished there was a tool out there that can capture the PCM programming for durangos. I would love to dload the PCM configurations of one of the Durangos that gets that kind of high MPG and download it to my PCM. Of course I have to make sure the Durango has the same engine tranny that I have.

I asked about year/price/location to help dial in if its worth it. I tend to browse the market locally all the time, just for fun. Yesterday checked two great condition Ds, one awd second 4x4, around 90k miles average price running 5 to 7. The average of 7 was mostly the 5.9ls in excellent condition. Sometimes i wished i would of waited a year or two before shelling out 13k for mine, but in the end no regrets.
