ALOT of $$$ and hard work I'd say like 10k or so not sure... not easy tho... I had a motor swap in an old chevy i had all i can remeber was it cost a ton and was a pain in the ass... got rid of it... Ive seen the cummings I6 in the 2nd gen Dakotas that was sweet... I'd like to do that swap on my dak when i win the lotto... GL

I would like to get a pre-2006 5.7 because they don't have the MDS system in them. I know it would be a lot of money but in the end think of all the possibilities that the 5.7L has to offer. It can be stroked to a 392 and there is a huge aftermarket for parts compared to the 4.7. I think it would be very much worth the money if I could find a motor and a shop that can do it for sure. There's a guy on the dakota-durangos site that swapped a 5.7 into his 2001 Dakota Club Cab. It was a lot of work but he knew what he was doing and seemed to have a limitless supply of cash to fix all the problems that came up. He got his motor with like 17,000 miles on it from a junkyard for just under $2000. I think I would go the same route, of course I would have my mechanic friend look at the motor for me. :)

If I wanted to go the easier route I could just get a 4.7L, I can get one with barely any miles on it for $1500. What do I need to switch to a 4.7l?

It would probably be as much as a PITA as switching it out to the 5.7...

Excuse me for asking what's probably a stupid question but what does PITA mean? Never mind... i've been up all night long and my mind just clicked on that one.

We all know you are bit slow...no worries! I guess you could say Owner like Truck...Truck like Owner... I dunno about the price being 10k but I bet for sure you'd be in around 5k or alittle more. I dunno much about the electronics with our trucks yet, but as far as switch to the 4.7, I would guess new ecu and such, new rad, engine, motor mounts, basically all motor compartment parts. Itd be less of a Pita to just buy a different truck with the 4.7 especially if you are lacking a bit of mechanical knowledge. Its quite a battle switching to a different size motor and getting everything to work like it use too.

I think I am honestly going to aim for the 5.7L sometime down the road. You'd be slow too if you just got done working all night in a county jail.

get a cummings!!! there so bad A**! the I6 is nice... not really sure on the cost ive heard the swaps get up into the 15-20 range depending on what u do. The one i looked at was a gen 2 dak it has custom everything he had to do a SAS to support the weight of the motor. the cheapest route would be to find a gen 3 with the 4.7 in it. or buy a crate motor all ready to go and fab the motor mounts and such... you'll need a new ecu and all of that other crap as well. its alot of work and money. and you have to work all of the bugs out. too much headache for me... oh ya and it cost too much for a poor man like me lol!...

The Cummins I6 will require a lot of modification, on the Banks Sidewinder (2nd gen) they had to move the firewall back to fit it in.

Well, since nobody has tried to actually answer the question logically... here goes nothing. lets say you went with a Donor truck. it would probably be the cheapest way. (can salvage Motor, trans, and engine harnes/cpu.) I have seen totalled rams at thw J/Y for around 6K Now figure in ATLEAST 80 hours of shop time for the install. (I have heard of swaps going faster, but the average time seems to fall into that time frame on many other vehicles. (IE Cavalier V6 swap, Civic B18c swap, Silverado 454 swap...) So that where I grabbed the arbitrary 80 hours. Around here, shop time runs around 150-200/hr. so lets go on the high side and say 200*80=16000... but then lets say you find a shop that knows what they are doing and can do it in half the time... so for 8 grand... you would still be in the 12 grand price range. So I would say, just get a ram for that money... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HEMI-V8-CD-CUSTOM-WHEELS-NON-SMOKER-REAL-NICE-TRUCK_W0QQitemZ280220126070QQcmdZViewItem

I don't know what I want to do I just thought it would be cool but Im pretty sure not very cost effective. I do really like the 2009 Dodge Rams so I think I might look at one of those in a year or two when there are some good incentives.

It would seem easier, and more cost effective, to try to find a new 4.7 out of a wrecked Ram or Dakota. It might be hard to find since they've only been out 6 months or so, but 300+ HP with no mods, and the swap should be relatively easy considering that it's the same engine block, so one would assume the same engine mounts also. Just a thought.

Just realize that you will have to obtain the wiring harness and ecu for a successfull install. Honestly, removing an engine and install is not what it seems. If you decide to stick with the 4.7L install, the nice part will be that Dodge has already gone through the fabrication to garuntee fitment. If you go with the 5.7L, you (nor I) have any clue about the issues that you will run into.....because no one has put one in our trucks yet. The shop that does the work will need to excell at fabrication and engineering. I'm sure you don't want that one guy that has R&I'd a couple motors that one time to take on the job. Honestly, unless you have a wallet and time, just get a new 08 Dak or maybe even the new 09 Ram...
