2000 dodge durango, i am trying to replace the water pump, took out the radiator, took out the fan shroud, was feeling pretty good at this point, now i cant get the large nut off the fan, the nut just turns and so does the water pump pulley, went to autozone, and borrowed the "special" clutch fan wrench thing, how do i use this thing, nothing fits, the 2 wrenches that come w/it dont even fit the nut, well actually 1 does, if you angle it, but then it slips out, and the nut is starting to lose its corners? and then there is another piece that looks like the end of a large wrench minus the handle, where does it go, because it won't fit anywhere there is no room to slide it behind the pulley, if thats even where it goes, its been 2 days now, i only have time to work on this truck after i get off work, so i only have a couple of hours a day to mess with it, and now its like an obsession, i cant work, because i am thinking what do i have to do to get this nut off so today, i went ahead and took the water pump off, w/the fan/nut/pully all attached w/it, i already have the new water pump, but i still need that nut and fan, how do i get this thing off? i also have other problems w/truck, but one thing at a time here, can anyone give me any suggestions? i am going to try a pipe wrench tommorrow, i kind of rigged a way to stop the pulley from turning with the nut by using 2 screwdrivers, my problem today was that i dont have anything that will fit the nut securely....hopefully i can solve this tomorrow.. thanks in advance... oh if i only had a pipewrench today.... Dan

well yes, the pain is getting the nut on and off, but before i go into that make sure you replace the small hose ontop. Im lost right now on the name, but it goes beneath the compressor. If yo dont replace it, you will have to do this all again down the road. Usually if no pulley tools are availible to hold, a strap wrench works fine. The nut, yes is a pain, but if possible a skinny 36mm wrench does the trick. ** If thats even out of the question get yourself a 12" adjustable wrench. If the pulley remover does work, try to get a long piece of flat 1/8ths metal/steel 2-3' long, two bolts/nuts (that fit). Drill one end, secure bolt, align to pulley, mark second hole, drill then insert bolt. If right your set.
