Not a mechanic (mechanical engineer [:D]), but hard shifting could be a bunch of things...here are my thoughts - 1) The clutch isn't fully disengaging when you push in the pedal, so they synchros have too much load on them to pull in and out of gear. I would think, though, if this were the case, if you managed to get it into 1st, the trans would grind and the truck would lurch as you manhandled it into gear. 2) One or more of the synchros are worn, broken, etc 3) The shift linkage is f-ed up, something got bent, shift fork is twisted...how does the shifter feel when things are good? Any excessive slop or crunchy feeling going from gear to gear? 42,000 miles is awfully low for any wear-related issues, unless you're a clutch rider or do 4000 RPM launches at every stoplight. My hunch is #3...if the truck isn't grinding or bucking around when this happens. One more dumb question, you did release your ebrake, yes? [8D]
