Overdrive

automatic -> Overdrive (4/18/2008 8:58:58 AM)

I just picked up a 96 Dakota a couple weeks ago, one thing i've noticed is that with overdrive on driving at highway speeds RPM's are 300-400 higher then with it off. I'm guessing it should be the opposite no?

I think you've got OD confusion...when the light is on in the dash, OD is OFF. If the RPMs are higher and an OD light is on in the instrument cluster, it's working fine.

so if OD is on, the RPM's should be higher?

sorry, when OD is off, the RPMS should be higiher?

Correct

hmm..i never messed with mine..ill have to take a look tomorrow.  i may have been running those 400-600 RPMS higher on highway [sm=headbang.gif](i do about 250 highway miles a week)

Overdrive = transmission output shaft spins faster than the engine = fewer engine RPM's for a given ground speed
