It is great that I found these forums..

I just picked up a 96 3.9 4x4 from my father when he switched over to a Ford 250 to tow his new camper and I could not see getting rid of this sweet truck. Dark green with the silver at the bottom. Chrome wheels standard equipment.

Last year we replaced the Engine and went through and replaced u/l ball joints and bushing. The only thing we did not hit was the trans and this is were I have a questions.

When the truck first starts in morning and with no more than 10 minutes warm time the trans jumps real hard from 2nd to 3rd. Feels almost like it hits 3rd and jumps out and back in, but hard. After about 15 minutes of warming time everything shifts just fine. The truck has only 114k trans and less then 20k on the engine.

the first thing i would do is drive the truck around until it is all the way up to temp., park it somwhere, put the E-brake on, put it in nuetral (while its still running) and check your fluid level.  this is from the FAQ's:

How do I check my automatic transmission fluid level?- Start engine and bring it to operating temperature (usually done by driving a few miles). With engine at operating temperature, park on a level surface. Shift the transmission through all the gears, and shift into neutral. Set the parking brake and pop the hood. Check transmission fluid (remember, engine must be running, transmission must be warmed up, transmission must be in neutral, and parked on level ground). Adjust as needed, DO NOT OVERFILL!

if its low on fluid, only use ATF+4 tranny fluid..again from the FAQ:

What automatic transmission fluid should I use?- Use ONLY ATF+3 or ATF+4 fluids! Under no circumstances should you ever use Dexron or Mercon transmission fluids! One special note: many synthetic transmission fluids (such as Amsoil and Mobil 1) are approved for Dexron/Mercon and are also either ATF+3 or ATF+4 approved OR "recommended for Chrysler transmissions," and it is perfectly fine to use these fluids.

hope this helps man, welcome to the forum too BTW!!  let us know how it turns out.
