Please HELP!!! I have a question about a 1989 Jeep Grand wagoneer with the 360ci. V8. I purchaced this Jeep not running, I first did a compression test- -This is how the comperssion test went - -1-98 2-110 -3-98 4-115 -5-110 6-120 -7-100 8-118 I replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, plugs wires, cap, and roter. After doing the tune up the Jeep cranked 5-6 times making a "fwooump" sound on every revolution, then it fired up - hi idiling at about 2500RPM - I kicked it down off high idle and it made a "snapping"noise through the carbuerator - it then idled very rough and would not idle on it's own - from then every time I would raise the RPM's it snapped like exhaust was comming up through the carb (not like a carb backfire, very steady), upon further inspection I found the plasticcarb baseplate to be cracked, and the gaskets were pushed out and leaking fuel. After researching carburators, rebuild kits, etc. I decided to purchase a Edelbrok aluminum 4bbl intake (non EGR) and a 600cfm. carb, eleminating the egr and all smog accessories thinking this would resolve the issue. It did not. The motor does run a lot smoother but still has a miss and still snaps through the carb when raising the RPM's. My question is - what would this snapping noise through the carb be? Iam under the impression that if the exhaust valves were hanging up, there would not be any compression. What am I missing?! I do not think this an AMC specific problem so I am posting this on several different forums. Thanks for any and all ideas...I'm ready to pull hair out!
