Next XK Spied! Jag plans XJ-like makeover for next-gen coupe, convertible The next generation of Jaguar’s bonded-aluminum XJ chassis will underpin the new XK sports car when the V8-powered aluminum-bodied coupe debuts in early 2006. Spied testing near Jaguar’s Coventry engineering center, the new XK is about the same length as today’s model, but is wider, has a longer wheelbase and shorter rear overhang. The disguise on this prototype hides a muscular-looking two-door bodyshell, with a more sculpted look than today’s curvaceous XK. At the front is the hallmark E-Type-inspired oval air intake, as well as one-piece headlights. The styling is the first complete Jaguar by design chief Ian Callum, who previously had only been able to influence facelifts and variants, like the X-Type wagon. The suspension is also borrowed from the XJ, meaning wishbones at the front and a multilink axle at the rear. Engines are carryover from today: a 300-hp 4.2-liter V8 and a 400-hp supercharged version, both available with an automatic gearbox. Jaguar will reveal the XK8 coupe at the Frankfurt show this September and the convertible at Los Angeles or Detroit in 2006. Production starts in early 2006 and U.S. sales should follow in early summer. Source: AutoWeek -Matt- Thumbnail Image
