Hello. a few months ago i purchased a dodge dakota 1996 from my grandfather. There were many initial problems with it... and i needed to replace the computer system in the truck. I also somewhat recently purchased a radio for the truck.
My problem is the headlights have stopped working. This has been going on ever since i figured out how to use the brights/passing lights. The lights used to work for a while, but would sometimes flicker off and then turn back on after pushing the switch and pulling it out again. This problem gradually got worse. up to now, the lights will never turn on, no matter how much i flicker the switch. Also, i have been using my manual pull passing lights (high beams) to drive, which is quite annoying as i have to hold them the entire time. it's really weird, because even when the switch for headlights is pulled out, pulling the high beam lights do not click and stay on, but release immediately unless held. this only happens when the headlights do not actually turn on, but if they turn on then the high beams will click and stay on. this problem has become even more severe tonight, as now even when i hold the manual brights/passing lights on, those lights will now turn off. I have checked both bulbs in the headlights, and they are both fine.
I really need some help, as both my father and i are stumped.
Thanks.

Multifunction switch maybe? That controls the flashers/flash to pass/high low. I'd be lieing if I told you thats whats caused it. But I guess its somewhere to start.

On top of the multi switch, it sounds like your headlight switch has went bad. My 93' did the same thing and it was the 15 dollar headlight switch, it takes about 15 min to change out. My 93' would flicker and flash just like you explained and this was corrected by the new switch. Good luck, hope this helps

Yeah, probably a bad connection in the switch. It'll come on and off due to vibrations.
