I don't know how much different the 4x4 is from the 4x2 I have all the REQUIRED special tools to replace the ball joints and it took me two days. Though I also replaced all the control arm bushings, switched the steering knuckles from the V6 to V8, (bigger outer tie rod ends), and the rack and pinion. I promise that will be fun!

I guess it is much harder than a 2wd! holy shit! it took me 4 hours to take the front end off, the six out without the tranny and everything detached! do or did you have a hand with it?

i did it by myself an it probably took 5 to 6 hours for me too for the whole thing, it took longer to get the damn frozen fan clutch nut off than the transmission bolts, lol.

ORIGINAL: Bad96_3.9 it took longer to get the damn frozen fan clutch nut off than the transmission bolts, lol. Actually, the engine-to-trans bolts came out fairly easily for me. Looking back, I don't know what really took me so long. I mean, I ran into road-blocks with linkages (both shift and transfer case) that didn't budge without some extra effort (which reminds me, I still need to connect the kickdown linkage...), and that crossmember (since the transmission mount didn't want to come off, until I got it out of the truck and could heat up the bolts, that added a little effort). It would have been easier if the transfer case would have seperated from the transmission while it was still in the truck. Oh well, if there is ever a next time (which, there better not be!) I think I can get it done in a "normal" amount of time. Actually, my tools have become so disorganized during this project (like, I can't find any of my deep sockets), that it seems like I spend more time looking for tools than I do actually working. Good news: It's almost all together. Just gotta fix an exhaust piece (cut the exhaust behind the Y-pipe after the crossmember was out, but tried putting it back in after the crossmember was in, it was cut too far back, so have to work something out; man is the Dakota loud when theres nothing behind that Y!), connect that kickdown linkage, connect the return line (added a cooler after the radiator), and she should be good to go. Bad news: I think the transfer case is stuck in 4WD. I say this because before I installed it, I tried manualy moving the connection (the drive selector) on the transfer case, and it wouldn't move, and when I rotated the front driveshaft yoke, both the rear driveshaft spline and the input spline rotated. However, I installed it in the truck anyways, hoping that just the smallest bit of driving will make it work (everything is installed how it came out, I followed the manual *almost* to the T, and even consulted Google, and the rebuild how-to's I found didn't state anything differant than the book) The front driveshaft isn't connected, however. Eh... So, for the transmission line I ran transmission-fluid-rated rubber hose (thats to and from the transmission). Yes, I know, I know, not a good idea. It's a "temp" thing though. When I get back down to Arkansas, I plan on buying either stainless steel braided line, or making my own stainless steel tubing lines (hahah... yea, right...) or, just purchasing new lines from the stealership. The hoses I used are 3/8". I won't exactly say I'm happy with how I had to run these "temp" lines, and am leaning more towards the stealership direct-fit lines, since the stainless braided line won't be any thinner than what I have. Any input? Next project: new master cylinder, power brake booster, and brakes all the way around. Than, some weekend after I get back to Arkansas, new tie-rods, ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm, and CV joints. Shoot, than I'll have an almost new truck! Just gotta get the rust figured out.

I have to quit promising you things, something else always happens. I SHOULD be under my truck this weekend to get that picture for you. Had issues getting parts for the top end this past weekend.

Nah, I already figured it out. On my truck, I have the "quick-disconnect" fittings. One the radiator, there is a bigger brass fitting that, when loosened, coolant starts to drain out. Threaded into that fitting is the connector that is threaded on once side, and "quick disconnect" on the other. See the attached picture. The threads on the threaded/q-d fitting match fairly closely to the -3AN fitting I bought for testing purposes.

I meant the 2-piece dust shield on the Transmission.

Ah.. yes. That. I already modified mine. Had to to get the damn thing in... Cut it right down the center with the die grinder. Than it slid right in without a problem. When I told my grandpa I was going to have to/did cut it, he thought I was trying to do something wrong to put it in. Seeing as the old one didn't want to come out, I know its because of the ribs they put into it that makes it hard/impossible. Thanks for the tip! Now, do you use anything to seal between the two pieces or not?

I didn't use sealer, I cut mine more towards the starter so there is more of a weight/length off the longer piece to keep pushed against the small side.

Oh well. Whats done on my $13 piece of metal is done. If I think I might ever have a problem, than I'll throw something on it. Tommorow the truck should be driveable. Waiting on a few exhaust parts...

So, its driveable now... BUT... 1) It's leaking coolant. In the garage, it was leaking, so I tightened the hose clamps (I replaced the spring clamps with hose clamps). That made it go away. Started the truck back up while in the garage and no more leak. However, than took it out for a drive, and pulled into a parking long to check transfluid and give everything a look over, and sure enough, a puddle was forming on the ground. When I got back to the house, there is coolant on each side of the lower engine comparment (you can see it on the frame and control arms) but mainly on the passenger side. Now, I did have the splash shields off both sides of the front wheel wells, but I don't recall having green rain here lately. I tired pin-pointing the source, but can't really come up with anything (yet, at least). 2) Transfer case (NP231) is stuck in 4WD. The front driveshaft is removed, but still, I obviously would like to add the front driveshaft and restore my ability to select 4WD (versus being stuck in it, not good). I know its the transfer case and not the linkage because when I had the case out, I tried shifting it (between any range selection), and it wouldn't. I did open the case (this was when I was having problems seperating the t/case from the trans), but put it back as the manual said. I did notice that upon reassembly, the mode fork didn't seem to want to move on the shift sector. I do believe the mode fork shaft is fully seated in its case bore. It wasn't like this before I opened it up, anyone got any ideas? Gotta head back down to Arkansas (700 miles) on Saturday, so hoping to get these problems figured out...

Well does the tranny work good? how much did it cost to rebuild yours? The local transmission shop quoted me $1100 for a OEM rebuild or $1300 for a heavy duty one with a shift kit, that includes a new convertor too. i did not think that was too bad. probably going to go ahead and get a stall convertor for it to when i do it!

I didn't get a rebuild. I got a new transmission (or a brand-new-looking rebuilt one, lol) for $2,000 (including convertor). I need to take out a pressure-test-plug and re-seal it because a little bit of fluid is coming out. I'll keep an eye one it and will likely do that when I run the permanent lines. I also burned up the park/neutral switch in the new one (I sent power through it by accident... my dumb ass not looking at the wiring diagram before misusing a jumper wire. my bad!) It shifts ok. It doesn't shudder giving it full gas from a stop (although, no burn outs). The 1-2 shift doesn't shudder or feel bad either. The 2-3 shift feels like the old one, which felt ok, a little soft, but ok. And it goes into OD ok. The coolant leak was the water pump. Picked a new one up at NAPA today, but couldn't get that damn clutch wrench anywhere. (Autozones loaner was out) So, special ordered it from NAPA, will be in tommorow morning. So guess what I will be doing tommorow? Give you a hint: freezing because its cold outside. When I get back to Arkansas, every weekend I'll have a differant project for my truck. Run new trans lines (and get a new aux cooler, mine has a small leak at one bend). New brakes all around, and new front end. Woo hoo!
