Toyota mystery car may be new Supra

Engineers from Toyota Motor Corp. visited Germany's famed Nurburgring racetrack last month to test a prototype sports car shrouded in mystery. Spy shots of the session have provoked widespread speculation on the identity of the vehicle and Toyota's production plans. Among the outrageous guesses are that the prototype is a mule hiding either a 500-horsepower V-10 engine or a high-performance hybrid powertrain. Sources in Japan say it's likely an early test bed for the next Supra, pulled from the U.S. market several years ago because of poor sales. Toyota insiders say the reincarnated Supra should reach the market in 2006 as a 2007 model. The rear-wheel drive coupe, being targeted at the Nissan 350Z, will be powered by a twin-cam 3.5-liter V-6 and priced from well under $30,000.

Looks like a factory built ricer to me. That would cramp the style of the SoCal customizers, wouldn't it?

ive read in some import mags that at one of the big overseas auto shows, nissan released its "07 us market skyline" and toyota countered with an AWD supra...

and waht is all the nonsense here lately with V10s....a V10 supra...a "V10 crown vic"...

From what I have read on the web and in mags is that the car pictured is a development mule for a 100k+ supercar. They reportedly are using a V10 with technology gleened from their formula 1 experience. I have not seen any indication that this (pictured car) is AWD, but midship engined (like the RX8) engine and RWD. The spoiler is just for high speed testing purposes and will be changed before (if) it gets built for the public. Just what I have read, I don't have any insider friends with Toyota, so I am just speculating like everyone else.

having owned an '88 Supra, knowing the motor likes to blow head gaskets, I'm not suprised sales sucked here in the US. Even the last model year had the same problem and toyota did nothing about it (recall). They did issue a TSB that changed the head torque spec up 10 ft lbs but that was a bandaid.

That wing is so laughable! God is that thing ugly! Everything else looks sharp.

that car looks more like a GT2 car than anything...i dont think theyd market a production car like that.
