Like you said, it shouldn't be too hard of a job. I always use hi-temp sealant applied to both the gasket and valve cover to help ensure against leaks. Just make sure you have the bolts lined up right before tightening them down...nothing like stripping one of those out to ruin your night. Also, putting one or two bolts thru the cover before putting it back on helps keep the new gasket in place while you're situating the cover back on the engine.

its not neccesary but i sure would recommend it.  It just helps the gasket keep things from leaking.

I use 3M Adhesive to get the gasket to stick to whatever it's going on and then use different colored RTV(sealant type) for the situation.  I would use black in your case.

so your saying you use the adhesive to keep it from moving so that its easier to line it up?

I dont know about using an ACTUAL adhesive on a gasket, but what I do is remove the cover, scrape the metal clean of all gasket/sealant debris and use some a rag (and solvent if needed) to wipe off the metal to make sure its clean and free from oil, apply a very think layer of high temp sealant to the cover, apply the gasket to the cover (the sealant holds it in place) and then apply another thin layer of sealant on the head.  After that just line up your holes, finger tighten all the bolts and then torque them all down.

Yes, it's easier than using RTV to stick it.  RTV gets dry kind of quick and it usually gets around the holes and will grab onto a bolt and move it around when trying to put it in.

what type of gasket ? rubber or cork ? I would get the rubber. If it leaks you can tighten it down over the years. Lasts longer. Some mechanics put of gaskets dry, some use sealant its all in preference. I would use some hi-temp
