Anyone know if there is any hope for the '99's to ever get called in? I own one and the ball joints are pure and total crap and finally failing at 90k miles. I hate to reinterate and bring up old posts but I too would like to know what the differnce between the 98's 99's and the 00-03's? Anyone?

My 2003 Durango 4x4 does not have a recall associated with it, if you look at your recall it says all that were built prior to Dec 2002...so they knew about the problem and changed ball joints then, or they are going to issue mine later when the demand cools down??? I have 13000 kms on my durango and took it in to the dealer because it pulled to the left and had a vibration from day one, well it went to the dealer for 4 trips total and they did not manage to get the pull out or the vibration although I have paperwork stating they did alignment, rotated tires, and balanced 2 wheels. I took it to a local alignment shop specializing in 4x4, paid 126 bucks and guess what, no more vibration and no more pull, they said one wheel was totally out of balance, had 3 oz of weight on it that it didn't need and the alignment was out also indicating my left pull.....so I think I might just keep an eye on my ball joints and pay myself for them to be replaced with some quality ones like Moog or something, if and when they become worn etc. or even if there is a recall, or possibly go to a different dealership!!! Definately the lattter. Good luck to all on your front ends.

90 thousand miles is pretty good for a set of balljoints in my book. If yours made it that long and didn't break off you did good. Consider the size of he tires and well the abuse those joints take, I will be happy if mine makes it that long.

I have a 2001 Durango 2 wheel drive, not a 4X4. It just passed the 50,000 mile mark. Are the ball joints a problem on this model (4.7 liter engine)? I understand that the two wheel drive models are not covered on the recall. Why is it that the 4X4's are covered and the two W drive's are not?

I was looking at the upper ball joints the other day and the rubber on the driver's side is cracked and exposing the inside of the ball joint. Seems that this could be a problem if moisture gets inside. Is this the problem on the 4X4's? Or, is it the additional stress and loads that the 4X4 mechanism puts on the front end? What exactly is causing the ball joints to fail?

What's different on the 1998 and 1999's?

No idea, I've had the ball joints replaced 5 times on my 1999 Durango, under warranty thankfully, because they were making that popping noise and the steering wheel was jumping everywhere.

I don't know as well, but that must suck replacing it that many times If it's no longer under warranty John English, why not do a trade in for another Dodge?

I haven't had any problems since I had it done last so I'm OK. However, I do think I'll sell it in the next little while. It's a great vehicle but the reasons why I originally bought it no longer exist. I used to do a lot of trips with my family but we're all older now and do our own things, plus it's a hassle trying to park it some times or driving in downtown traffic. It's also a little unrefined. I don't think I'll get another Dodge, they don't really have anything that interets me.

the 98-99 durangos had a different front suspension than the 2000 and above models, however i think that DC needs to recall these years as well due to cra ppy quality. Ive spent over 2k repairing this heap (3 times replaced upper/lower ball joints. 3 sets of tires due to alignment constantly being out of whack)

Aloha everyone,

I just bought a 2002 Durango and was wondering if there was any way to verify that the recall work was done. The local dealer said that it was done last year, but I don't trust them.

Thanks!

Check the carfax or call Dodge Recall Line (800) 423-6343, the dealer should be able to give it to you also. Just give them the VIN, they'll tell you if recall is pending or when it was completed and where.

When I called the dealer and the Dodge 800 number they both had the "problem, what problem?" story down pat. My balljoints are a poppin and they acted like they never heard about it before. I even gave them the TSB numbers. No help. So what is the real story? Who do I have to call. It sounds like some of the people on this forum have gotten the work done via warranty. I just went past the 3 year mark and I have 53K on the clock. Is there an extended warranty for the balljoints? The dealer has "no idea what I am talking about." What's up?

Just in case, I priced the Moog upper balljoints at $48 per side. Has anyone done the swap themselves? Are any special tools needed? I have compressor, die grinder and impact chisel and jack/jackstands. $500 to 700 to have someone do it sounds like alot. What do you all think?

Thanks,
Dan
