I'm trying to remove some surface scratches (that haven't gone through the clear coat) and was wondering if a power polisher/buffer is strong enough to do this (whileusing scratch remover)? I was looking at buying a 7" polisher with 3800 random orbits per minute to do this. I'm not sure if I should invest in something more expensive with a more powerful motor/moreamps or should something like this work just fine? Thanks!
I've always used two products in two steps. The products to use are McGuires Colorx (the rx is the same as a medicine rx) follow the instructions on bottle remove with a clean micro fiber cloth. This is a polish and not a wax, this is not a wax. To wax the area you just polished I use McGuires Gold Class wax again follow directions and remove with a clean micro fiber.
I did this to my Aries, it had fine scratches from the little old lady who owned it before me she would put her hand bag on the roof when she unlocked the doors or on the trunk when she would unlock it.

I would not use a power polisher, because if your not careful you could burn off the paint or leave swirl marks. If you get swirl marks you have to go over it again with swirl remover. I always wax my cars by hand and they look great.

Another general rule is that if the scratch goes away with a thin layer of water on it, then it should be able to be polished out. Lick your finger and rub it on the scratch. I use cutting compound to remove scratches with a power polisher. This is not a beginners method, and does require using swirl remover to take out the polish marks. On black vehicles I use a 4 step method.
1. Cut polish
2. Synthetic cutting creme (finer cut)
3. 1 step polish and glaze
4. Hand wax
It usually takes about 4 to 6 hours, but will make the vehicle look as good as possible.

If the damaged area is fairly large or badly damaged, a power buffer may be used with NOVUS No. 2 and No. 3. Use a clean cotton bonnet and operate the buffer at a low speed to avoid overheating the plastic, approximately 1,000 RPM. Each polish should be applied with a seperate, clean bonnet.
