I took my 2001 Dodge Dakota (80kMI, 4.7 v8 4X4) into the dodge dealer 2 days ago.  I was told by them that I needed to get the throttle body cleaned because it was pretty gummed up.  So I had them do the fuel system service cleaning ($114).  The service guy said that cleaning the throttle body was part of this service.

It took them a little less then an hour.  I got the truck back it feels like it idles a little rougher.   Also, before the service I was getting 13 MPG, and now I am getting even worse, 11.5-12 MPG.

WTF???   I thought it would be better after the service.

Anyone have any ideas of what is going on?   Is there anything I can do to fix this???

that is a damn shame my exact reason for not going to a dealer ever unless its warrenty related. cleaning the throttle body is very easy and anyone could do it with basic tools. i would check to make sure everything is hooked up correctly still, could also be a bad tps thats causing the rough idle. i would look into that not sure if there is a way to test it or if you just have to replace it. i got mine replaced under warrenty but from what i remember its not to expensive of a part and easy to change. they probably did it but you can also clean the iac mine was really dirty when i did it.

Idle Air Control.

Cleaning the fuel deposits could have jammed something else up.  I would start with cleaning IAC and make sure they didnt re-connect something wrong

I cleaned the throttle body and it was dirty.   I also cleaned the IAC which was dirty.

I replaced the PCV valve and 1 of the oxygen sensors.

I am still getting bad gas mileage 11-12 mpg.

Does anyone have any other ideas?   I cannot figure this out??????????

Have you tried talking with the dealership to ask exactly what they did for the "fuel system" cleaning? I would go as far as to talk with the actual mechanic who worked on my truck. Honestly, if you've done all that stuff and it's still getting bad gas mileage....I don't know what else you could look at. It might sound stupid but I know when I bought mine (used) I drove it straight home and changed the oil. It wasn't pretty coming out, didn't look like it had been changed for a year. I used Pennzoil Platinum Plus Full Synthetic and a Fram oil filter....drove it for 500 miles and changed it again.  I saw about 2-3 MPG's just with that. Don't know whens the last time you changed the oil?

could also be something like a clogged catylitic converter. if it seems sluggish that could cause some problems including bad gas mileage. i got a magnaflow hi flow one on mine along with my exhaust imo the best option. i'm getting 16-21 mainly 16-18 in the winter and 17.5-19 in the summer and its been as high as 20-21 on my trips in warm weather up to school so you should definitaly be getting better than 11-12.

I changed the engine oil and filter.  I put in royal purple and a fram filter.  I know fram sucks....but the oil set me back.  I am goin to wait 3000 miles then run seafoam through it and change the oil again.

I did see an increase in mpg going from regular oil to royal purple.  That stuff rocks, I am getting about 16mpg in about 3 degree F temps.  Very cold.  So when it warms up and when I take out the 300lbs of sand bags in the bed of the truck, I should raise the mpg even more.  WOOT!!!!!!

I also change the rear dif to full synthetic.    I am going to do the front and the trans later next month to full syn.

Never again will I use normal oil.

I worked at a dodge dealership (General manager)  sounds like you need a new throttle body, sometimes when its gunked up really bad a cleaning wont help.

first of all, they may have not taken the t.b. off the eng. to clean it,and depending on what they used to clean it,it may have contaminated the o2 sensors or the cats... nothin you can do there, unless you want to look into what you're o2 sensors are "seeing"
If you are goin to clean it,take it off the eng.!,inspect the o-ring,and if it looks usable, use a little vaseline on it to make sure it seals, make sure the i.a.c. is clean and seats properly, then when you put it back on,(don't overtorque the bolts),check it's operation by turning on you're a/c and watch the tach raise up to proper specs, all the guys at the "stealer" are going to do is spray some junk down in there w/ the eng. runnin and call it a day!
