I just bought a used 2006 charger with a 3.5L. It has 24000 miles, runs great, and no check engine light when I bought it. I used the tank of gas in it, filled it up with 87oct gas, and put fuel injector cleaner in the full tank. The check engine light came on yesterday, and is still on. I don't think I need to panic, but I'd like advice. Would injector cleaner and 87oct make this happen? I'm thinking that I will use up this tank, and then refill with 89oct and see what happens before I take it in. Any thoughts  ??

Just tighten your fuel cap that did the trick for me.

Check what code that caused the check engine light to come on by...

Put the key in the ignition (don't start the car)
Turn the key to the Acc position.
* * Do the following quickly * *
Turn the key from Acc to on.... then back to Acc and to on... one last time back to Acc to on.

The code(s) will be displayed where the milage is on the dash and dashes --- --- will be displayed when the list of codes is done displaying.

You can check the codes here on the fourm at this link ODB II codes

I believe a P0403 would be the gas cap thing mentioned in the post above.  Anyhew just post up the code and we can take it from there.

Loose gas cap or leaving the car running while filling the tank will trip an engine light.

do mean to hyjack the thread, but I have a question that pertains directly...

if it is a loose cap or if I were to fill it while it is running does the check engine light reset itself or do you have to do something else to make it go away?

The code will reset after a set number of successful startups without error condition.  Of course I don't remember how many times that set number is

Here are a couple options to clear the code manually:

Most tuners allow you to clear the codes.

Pull fuse 11 for a minute and replace it.

Pull the negative battery cable for a minute and replace it.

I too just bought a 2006 SE 3.5 and started runnign 87 gas in it and after 2 tanks got the check engine light. I used my code checker and got a mis-fire on cyclinders and after switching back to 89 and 93 gas it went away. Maybe it makes a difference. BUt, can running on 87 harm your engine long-term?
