Dodge does not put the Viper engine in a Ram anymore.  But this is good news, eventually, if Ford, and Chevy do these things Dodge will reply with something.

FYI, in case you are not aware, the 5.7 in the 09 is upped to 380HP.

well, the 5.4 3v is a gas sucking joke, the v/10 3V is a under powerd joke and the new 6.4 diesel is having teathing issues, Speaking as long time Ford owner, with my first dodge Ram, a 06 2500 Ram, Ford has not had a good truck engine since the old days, 302 351-400 460 ect.

The moduler engines were susposed to save ford money as the 4.6 5.4 have inter change able parts, but the 5.4 3v has cam phaser issues amd the dual timming chains that go slack when the enine is not running and than break when the engine is running ( my 04 F150 5.4 3v had numerious melt downs with electrical, axel seals and engine issues )

Ford has a great history of dodging ( play on words ) problems and I'm aware dodge still has issues, But I'm more than happy with my Ram.

Ford has great idea's, but the whole truck gets lost from papper to assembly ...

I will be honest, I am a ford guy at heart, and I love my stang, with a mod motor none the less. But when I bought a truck, I bought a dodge for a reason. The newer 3V's have had their problems and I didn't want to worry about it. I have friends that work for Ford dealers and know what the normal issues they have are. I know a few people that work at Dodge dealers and there seems to be fewer problems with the dodge trucks than the fords. As far as diesels, the 7.3 was a champ, but the 6.0 sucked, and the 6.4 I think is in between. The cummins is the one to go with. The Dodge trucks have improved a lot since I owned my '01, and my '06 is a really nice truck.

+1 Very true, I don't mind ford's trucks but the 5.4's are gutless and the sluggish V10 is just a grenade waiting to happen

Good question. While 380hp is a nice bump in hp it's still just playing catch up with the Tundra's 381hp v8. And still has less power than the GMC Denali's 403hp 6.2L v8. So if Dodge wants to keep their bad ass Hemi image they need to step it up. No excuses.

I don't think they design trucks for the most hp race. I think 380 hp is plenty for the half ton truck- besides if its hp and speed your after, heres one for you SRT-10. I am pretty sure nobody else can top that. And wow the Boss f150 has 425 hp, rub over 500 hp in his face with "Srt-10". im pretty sure somebody said in an earlier thread that with all that hp from ford and the performance time was still slower than the hemi.

I agree. If you want to rub something in your friends face, ask him about the 08 F-150 Harley Davidson edition. I posted a thread making fun of it a while back. It has 450 supercharged horses, 500 torque, and does 0-60 in 7 seconds flat. It's pretty sad that they are no faster than a Hemi, oh, and the speed control is set to 94 mph.....YAY!!
Here is the article on the F-150...

Everyone knows that if you want a fast truck, buy a diesel. I didn't trade in my Charger to my Ram to go fast. I bought my truck to use it like a truck.

Well, the BOSS engine has been put on hold for a bit since fuel prices have sky rocketed. Most new launches are being delayed until 08 inventory is sold off. Trucks are slow moving right now and everyone want''s an econobox.
The 6.2L engine is capable of 7.0L and over 700hp. There is a test engine in a Roush drag car that is N/A and runs on E85 making about 800hp.
I have always owned Fords until i recently bought my 08 RAM. I must agree as do most Ford people that the 5.4L is an oversized pig that should make over 100hp more for the fuel mileage that it gets.
My 01 5.4L 2V was a 4x4 and got a best of 15mpg on the highway with a Predator tuner. My ram is 2wd and is gettin 18+ on the highway with under 1000 miles on the clock with 85 more hp!!

I always thought that bragging rights for your truck came in the form of highest max payload, and towing capacity, how long it lasts, and how well it does off-road.

Screw its 0-60 and 1/4th mile times, who cares?  Why do you need to be the fastest pickup?  Trucks are horrible for high speed, they cant handle for sh*t (most of the models).

My Dad is a huge Ford guy.  We are in the mid size battle tho.  He has a ranger and i have a dakota, lol, I pretty much win in every segment, but his is king off road, those little rangers can get anywhere with ease.  The 4.0 is great too.

With the state of Chrysler, we don''''''''t need to be putting the Viper engine in the Ram right now.

Why would Dodge put the 6.1 in the Ram anyway. The 6.1 makes 425hp, but the 5.7 makes 390 and gets WAY better gas milage. WAY better.

Yes, I said it, 390hp: http://www.dodgeforum.com/fb.asp?m=1350363

Horsepower sells cars, torque moves ''em.  That''s one place the Ford SOHC truck motors have always lacked.  The 3v 5.4 is notably better than the older version, but the 5.7 Hemi, 5.3 Vortec and that nasty little 5.6l DOHC Nissan motor ar far more responsive.  To be honest, stock Ford trucks have always felt sluggish, even with the big 460.

We''ll see how this 6.2 does, but I suspect Ford will continue to lag behind Chrysler and GM as they have for many years.

Fords sluggish trucks were mainly do to the poor gear spacing in their 4 speed auto, and the 5.4s relatively low horse power. The 5.4 is a very torquey however, 365 ft-lbs @ ~ 3400 RPM. I think a big reason even the 460 felt sluggish is that it was just crippled by the 70-90s emissions. It just wasn''''t designed to deal with that kind of restriction. I think it had like 240-250 HP in its final year.

I heard the 6.2 has been temporarily canceled though, do to the high gas prices, well it will at least NOT make the 2010 model year.
