Hi. I recently bought a 1991 Dakota off my boss' son. It has a lot of kilometers on it, over 200,000km and needs a tune up badly. My first question is about the engine. I have the 3.9L V6 and i was wondering if there is any difference in the engine between mine and a '92 that has the "Magnum" badges.

The '92 and later Magnum motors are different. They are also fuel injected and produce more horsepower.

Ok, I've tuned up the engine and got it running nice and smooth. The truck has 241,000kms on it. I have to have it finished and safetied by the 20th of this month and I have one huge obstacle. The ignition is messed up horribly. He said the gear on the end of the ignition cylinder (starter gear? it sends power to the starter when you crank it over) broke and he had to rig up a push button ignition system out of..would you guess it? a doorbell..Now this button provides the starter with power when you press it. So the starter will turn whenever the button is pushed...key or not. But without a key in the ignition and the ignition turned to "start", holding the button will not start the engine. It will only keep cranking and cranking. Put the key in and push the button and she runs.

I called an auto shop and they said that as long as it doesn't start in gear than it will pass inspection. I went outside and tried and it started in drive. Is there anything i can do besides buying a new ignition cylinder?

Well thank you everyone who bothered to try and help me out. I've decided to just get a used steering column instead for $75. Big deal, 2 keys, at least it will pass safety. Anyways nice talking to you all, no one here bothers to help anyone no matter how much they need it, so see ya around. At least on the FORD forums they help you. This is pathetic. And the '91 3.9L wasn't carburated, so the only difference between the '91 V6 and a '92 Magnum is the Magnum parts. No wonder Dodge is dying out. Some community here.

OOOh No she is leaving us for the ford group. If only everyone had rushed to send her a pic of a Magnum with the different parts circled.
