CAFE doesn't even apply to 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. In pickups, it's future is secure.

It could remain in cars and make the average if it was reduced to 318cid or 273cid.

What none of these "CAFE panic" articles mention is that for big luxury vehicles, Chrysler can just pay the guzzler fine. In something like a $40,000 Challenger SRT, an extra $2500 gas guzzler tax is not going to stop the audience for a 500hp car.

Eventually, the Hemi will die, but as long as there is a market for it, they will produce it. As mentioned earlier, the fine won't disuade most people who are buying a performance vehicle or commercial vehicle. Even in the Peoples Republic, the emissions are less stringent for heavy duty (over 5500 lbs) vehicles. A little secret: pay just a little higher regisration fee for commercial plates and you avoid the guzzler fee in the Peoples Republic (no you don't have to have a business license).

this is what ive been saying the WHOLE time about this CAFE crap...but too many people would rather panic and whine than think about it rationally.

laws like this ALREADY EXIST.  thats why high powered cars have to deal with gas guzzler tax.  The taxes might just be bigger.  lets also keep in mind, that i know someone with a 300C who, on long car trips, gets up around 30mpg.  technology advances, and they will make more power with better mpg.  i also know several new Z06 owners.  when cruising on the highway, they get 25+mpg, from a car that WILL go 200mph, and will run in the deep 11s, stock...

I am hanging on by my finger nails so that in 2009 or 2010 I can cheat on my current love on four wheels by trading in my Charger R/T for an SRT8.....if the bodies and engines are not runied by then.  Otherwise I may have to think about buying a used SRT8.

I need a crystal ball :)

Im with BadStrat on this one... the manus will just keep passing down the cost of the tax to the first buyer, as it has been done for awhile now, and the CAFE doesnt mean squat, its all tree hugger hype. Those people that want the more powerful gas suckers will pay the tax to own it if they want it. And whats so "great"(extreme sarcasm here) about it is that the second and consecutive owners dont get penalized in the least, so pick one up used and you wont have to worry about it anyway because the first owner took the hit for you.
