andychen -> advices on buying a 2002 Intrepid (1/21/2008 9:10:09 PM)

I am a college student and looking to buy a fleet car from my university.  Fleet cars from our university are always well maintained and have a good reputation among us students. This specific car is 2002 Dodge Intrepid, 45900 miles.  They ask for $5400 which is always $1000 less than Kbb private party values.  Now here is the problem.  I saw four repairs in the car history offered by the university (none listed on Carfax). The four repairs cost $2200, $1800, $500 and $800.  The repaired parts include rear bumpers, front bumpers, fences, a door, wheel, and some suspension parts.  It seems that they were all body work.  I don’t have much experience with cars.  So I am wondering if it is still OK to buy this car.   The thing is if I buy a used car from a dealer or a private owner, I might not even know if there were any repairs before.   I appreciate any advices.

The parts you mentioned may have been replaced due to an accident it may have been in. If you are looking to buy the car, take it to a bodyshop and have them inspect it.

What engine does it have?

My advice on buying an intrepid? A wreck is fine as long as the bodywork is done.

Under no circumstances purchase it is it has a 2.7L engine - if you wiped with the money, you'd at least get some use for it before it went down the drain.

What is the problem with the 2.7L engine?? Is it only a performance issue you are talking about?
