OK my car died and when I would jump it to get it home it would run for about 1 mile then it would start doing strange things like ABS light on, all the interior lights would come on by themself. Then the lights would dim until the car would shut off. Then I would jump start it again and it would happen again. Well when changing the altenator I noticed the 6ga power wire burned against the manifold. Fixed the wire issue with a splice and still nothing. Replaced the altenator because it tested bad, still nothing. Overnight charge battery only to have a dead cell. Changed battery. Car ran great for about 10 miles then the battery light came on. Drove car back home then it did the same as before. Once it starts to lose power it does weird things then dies. I also used a 12V light tester and found the Altenator runs good, the wire looks good and is hot after the splice. So what else do I need to look for after the splice? Is there a fuse I'm missing or a line fuse. Something between the altenator and battery. Altenator is working but charge is not making it back to the battery. any help??

You can't tell if the alternator is working without a voltmeter, I don't believe. If your checking the battery feed wire blk-gry, that wire may be hot, even with the key off, backfeed from the battery. I believe you need to take a voltage reading across the battery posts, full charge is around 12.6 volts, that is a generic figure, so a little more or less is ok. Then start the engine and check voltage again, should be around 13.5 volts. The point is, the second reading should be higher. Yes, you can take a reading at the bat feed terminal on the alternator, with the engine running, but, it needs to be a voltage reading. The testlite won't show the volts. My information shows, the alternator feed for the battery goes to the power distribution center.

there is a fuseable link in the wiring harness about 6" from the battery where the alternator wire feeds the battery main cable to the distribution center. i have replaced at least 30 of those when they melt. remove the battery and take a razor blade and peel the tape of the harness from the battery to the distribution block. very common problem with the older intrepids.
