I was in an argument with the owner of a 2004 Ford/SVT F-150 Lightning. He was saying how the HEMI engine is horrible. He laughed and said that the new HEMI's 345HP couldn't compare to the Lightning's 380HP. Here was my argument: The HEMI's 5.7L is NA, the Lightnings 5.4L is SC. The 5.4L without the Supercharger is 260HP. The HEMI with a Supercharger is 517HP. Besides, the point of HEMI's re-introduction in the Ram was for Heavy Duty purposes. What do you guys think?
Nothing to say, you said it all. The Hemi is the better engine. 71ROADRUNNER38016.1027314815
I have to disagree that the Chevy's look just as good as the rams, they look freakin' plain to me, yeah the Fords are boxy and ugly I think, but the Ram just looks so good.  and I want Truck Trend to do a shootout with 2wd short bed reg cab with the new F150, Hemi Ram, and the Chev.  Can you say Landslide??
Don't bet the farm! The 2wd Silverado sb with 5.3,3.73 gears and 5 speed ran 0-60 in 7.3 and 14.78 in the qtr.! I love my Ram but most of the Chevies are quicker!

I am not sure I am going to add much to this discussion but I will try. I have a 2000 Ford F-150 4x4 super cab with the 5.4 and a 2003 1500 hemi 4x4 quad cab.  Before I bought the Dodge I drove the GMC's and Fords.  Additionally, my company purchases quite a large number of trucks each year for the fleet, I am part of that.  I am talking work truck and light duty, not performance trucks.

Racing a 2wd truck with regular cab compared to a 4x4 four door is not a good comparison.  Not sure why that statement even needs to be made!  Crap a chevy s-10 4.3 will smoke most large trucks simply based on hp to weight.  Now load em up with equal weights and see what happens.  The 5.4 is not a race engine guys it is a truck engine.  It produes power down low and does not rev to the moon, like a hemi.

My hemi does have more power than my 5.4 in the upper r's but not enough to make me go around crowing like a rooster though.  The hemi gets horrible mileage and performs poorly under low rpm with or without a load.  I prefer my 5.4 in many situations and the hemi in others.  Overall I like the valve of the Dodge but don't be sure that the 5.4 is a POS just because it "might" not win a drag race.  My 2000 5.4 gives the hemi fits until 60, the hemi edges the ford out by a door length.

Sorry to break you guys hearts here, but the comparison between the Lightning and the Hemi Ram is not even a fair one.  Just to quickly mention that the 500-hp Viper "Truck" isn't hanging with the Lightnings is enough said.  The Hemi is a good motor, but pair both trucks up straight from the factory and the Lightning will smoke the Hemi every time.  The Lightning was built with the sole purpose of hauling ass. the Hemi-Ram more for power and towing not for sport truck.  Just food for thought.  The only competition for the Lightning right now is the SRT-10, and it will be good.

Have to agree with you. The fact that you are stating facts and not coming here and putting other vehicles down is great. Do me a favor, as soon as you see a Titan, smoke his a$$. Lightning is built for Speed and the Hemi is multi functional. I have seen many Lightnings at the track, they are impressive. This coming season should be interesting, many mods are becoming available for the Hemi.

You know SVT, I could careless, two of my neighbors have Lightnings (only is a 2001 that is souped up w/ over 450 horsepower, the other one is a stock 2004) and they don't impress me one bit. I rathier drive our 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. All I have to do is throw on a VORTEC Supercharger on the 6.0L and damn, she will be cranking out more ponies and torque and a Lightning. So !

SVT, are you serious? The SRT Ram beat the Lightning BY 4 thenths to 60, 7 tenths in the 1/4 Mile, and 7 MPH in the 1/4 Mile. They stuck 650lbs of weight in the bed of the SRT, and though it lost by two tenths to 60, it came back and beat the Lightning by 1 MPH and 2 tenths in the 1/4 Mile. By the way, it already outweighs the Lightning by 480lbs. Also, drag racing is only one kind of race, in a track race, the SRT would murder it, "This truck [Ram SRT-10] turns, corners, and handles more like a sports car than a truck." - TT

Blah Blah Blah, Who has driven a chev, a ford, and a
dodge with the best performance engines??? I
respect the 5.3 Chev Engine, f-150's are ok too, but
having driven all 3, and not just because I'm a Mopar
guy, the hemi is more impressive. You can throw
out all the 0-60, quarter mile stats, or whatever, if
you're giving stats, give them for all 3. My trusty ol'
Butt-Dyno tells me the Hemi pulls harder and all
around is the best runner. I have not driven an 04 F-
150 yet but I hopefully will so I can't be 100% sure.
but a 99 5.4 don't match up to the other 2. Yes I
know functionality is a big thing too, but I don't have a
4wd and I don't tow much, so I am gonna be more
performance speed oriented. I'm into trucks
because cars are not as fun, this is the only way to
get a v-8 Rear Drive that is fun and affordable. So
lets quit bickering and roll on with our trucks, ok? By
the way my friends 4.3L Extreme kicks the crap out of
me      but I just can't cram myself into mini's
anymore, lol.

Are you a Dodge closet fan? You had to be reading the forum for hours to get back to this post!! Talk about bring it back from the dead.

First of all the Hemi is not a car motor.... As a matter of fact the Hemi in the truck is rated at more HP than the Hemi they put into the cars. Any car guy knows that engine blocks and internals are the same along all base engine platforms. Then different heads, intakes, injection, ect caters to the application.

2nd, it is not Dodge's performace truck, that is the SRT-10. Would you like to compare performance truck to performance truck?

Fords performance truck is the lightning, the fact that the Hemi (non-performance truck) is comparable to the lightning is rather embarrasing for Ford.

I could come up with some good adjectives to describe you but since I value this board I will hold judgement.

Oh, and since you are talking muscle car era Hemi.... That was an entirely different motor. The only thing shared here is the hemispherical shape of the pistons. So based on that, your Ford "truck" motor is the same as the SB Ford I had in my 68 Mustang! Some people....

first off, dodge > ford we'll get that out of the way early

next, learn to compare vehicles in the same class, the lightning has a power adder, its fords fastest truck its not in the same class as a hemi ram

and finally, if you wanna start an argument dont dig up an old thread, it just makes you look stupid
