i noticed today that my driver's side windshield wiper has lost the pin/screw that holds the blade to the arm. at least i noticed this before i was driving somewhere. can i buy a replacement pin/screw or can i just put a "regular screw" in the hole to keep the blade from falling off the arm?

I'd put a screw in there, just to protect yourself from accidentally bumping the wiper switch on the way to the parts store.

You could check with your local auto parts store and see if they have a pin from a takeoff.  However, you might be better off buying the whole wiper blade for 7 bucks.  Something like this:
