Harman Pecker head better get it right this time.

Silkk19 -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/28/2007 6:15:57 PM)

Thanks for that update.  I just installed it today and everything worked just like you said.

Voodoo Avenger -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/28/2007 6:21:11 PM)

just curious...is there a detailed list of which "problems" this update addresses?

futil -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/29/2007 12:07:41 AM)

Aside of what I listed which is based on what I have seen from installing the update, from what others are saying after installing the update and the input from a Harman Becker tech, there is no formal list since the update hasnt been officially released yet.

needforsleep -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/29/2007 7:06:50 PM)

Do you know if this is for REN and RER radios?  REN = No navigation and RER = With Navigation.

The reason I ask is that I have an RER in my 08 Avenger and I have an REN in my 08 Caravan.

I know they are both Harman radios but they are physically different with the different buttons on the front.

futil -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/29/2007 8:25:59 PM)

 That's actually a pretty good question.. This upgrade has been installed successfully on MyGIG radios with navigation but I don't know if it will work or was meant to be applied to the non navigational MyGIG radios.

The install is 564MB so based off of the size I would assume navigational data will be updated.

I just contacted Harman Becker and asked them if the same patch will work on non-navigational MyGIG radios, I also asked that if there is a different installation image will an update be offered for that radio.

I'll let you know when I hear back from them.

futil -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/30/2007 4:32:46 AM)

I heard back from Harman Becker..

They said that this update will not work with REN (NON Nav) radios because the REN MyGIG radios have a different architecture inside them. You also can not update them to be a RER (Nav enabled) radio.

If you tried using this patch on a non nav radio it would refuse installation.

There currently is an officially released update for the non nav radio but they said that there are very few changes that the user would notice.

Send an email including your name and Address and ask for a REN software update CD to Steve Montealegre at Harman Becker ( SMontealegre@harmanbecker.com ) and he will send you an upgrade CD for the MyGIG REN.

So to answer your question.. This patch is only for MyGIG radios with Navigation.

jt239 -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/30/2007 6:24:23 AM)

I tryed the update and it seemed to work but when I returned to my vehicle the nav was freakin out.  It is trying to update again and keeps giving "serious error (1200)"  Can anybody help??
The unit wont respond to anything I do...I want to put the disc back in and try the update again hoping it will clear the error.  Any ideas, I am desperate at this point.  Thank you.

needforsleep -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/30/2007 9:30:57 AM)

futil, you might want to edit the title of this thread and edit your main thread so no one attempts to update their REN radio with this file.

I emailed the Harman rep and requested an REN update for my 08 Caravan since I have had an annoying bug that happens when attempting to play a bad file.  The system will lock itself down. :(

needforsleep -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/30/2007 9:35:48 AM)

I forgot to ask, but after the flash update do you loose your personal information that was stored on the drive, like photos, music files, Destination Entries, Bluetooth pairings, etc?

futil -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/30/2007 11:20:06 AM)

For the Nav freaking out issue, I heard others with that problem saying that all you need to do is drive for a while and it fixes itself but I don't recall anyone saying that they had a message "serious error (1200)" Try driving for a while and see if that helps.. if not try reinstalling the patch..

After the install is complete, and the system restarts.. When you see the message asking you to install the same Version number again select no then remove the CD. It may be possible that you started another install then removed the CD before it was done.. (Just guessing)

All of my files and settings are still there after the patch..

I have been on vacation since my install and haven't had the chance to really check out all the features so I may have a freaking out nav too.. Anyone that has problems with this patch, Try not to panic too much as the official patch is coming out soon and you should be able to apply it over this one which should fix any issues you are having and as soon as I get the official patch ill post it for you all..

The install should stop anyone trying to install on a REN plus if people read a little into this post they should see which radio its for.. Worst case scenario would be wasted time.. I was planning on adding the REN install to this post so I just added a note above the download link for now...

jt239 -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/30/2007 12:16:36 PM)

Thank you for the response.  I ended up pulling the fuse because the screen stayed on after i removed the key and opened the door.  I never waited long enough to see if it would timeout, I guess i could try that.  But the screen wont open for me to put the disc back in...its possible I may have made a mistake and hit yes, again, to reinstall after the software installed.  No response from any buttons...it just keeps cycling like its trying to install an update but there is no disk in there.  i even downloaded to a usb drive and tryed that with no luck...

lwoods01 -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/30/2007 12:28:04 PM)

futil,

I'm new here... thanks for all the info.  You've been really helpful.

I downloaded the patch and applied it last night.  My former version was 9.041.  I followed your directions - knowing that the whirring noise was okay helped too.  After about 15 minutes, the system rebooted itself and showed another diagnostic screen (something like "frontal filters updated).

Then something strange thing happened.  The CD would not eject.  I tried turning the power on and starting the car several times.  When I was about to give up in despair, the CD ejected.  Everything appears to be working now.

After rereading your instructions, I realized that the motor was not running during the install.  I don't know whether that had any impact on the install or not, but it makes me wonder.

futil -> RE: MyGIG Software Update (12/30/2007 10:14:47 PM)

When the update CD is installing it is extremely important not to interrupt the installation until you see the screen asking you to install the same version again. I think I need to change the install instructions to include that screen so no one else will make that mistake because it is difficult to figure out when to stop the installation.. There is no "Your installation is complete" message it just asks you to upgrade to the same version that has just been installed again.

Lwoods01, The recommendation that you leave the car running in the instructions was added by me and while it isn't a requirement to install the CD correctly it will make you more comfortable while waiting for the CD to install and will make sure that you wont accidentally run the battery down making sure that the radio has enough voltage during the install which is just a precaution. but if you leave the engine off it shouldn't make a difference. I also figured there would be less of a chance that someone would try to start the car halfway through installation after they decided that they were freezing their asses off which would cause the install to fail.

The radio is a lot like a computer where if you are installing an operating system in a computer then you eject the CD before it is complete you end up with an unbootable computer and in this case.. an unbootable radio.
Computers usually allow you to eject the CD and try again however the radio uses the software to instruct the hardware eject the CD and if the software is corrupted then it will not eject since the radio cant get to the point where it can load the code to eject the CD.

JT239, If your radio is totally unresponsive and you can't get the CD door to open then the chances are that the radio does not have enough of the patch installed to boot correctly. On almost all CD ROM drives on computers there are emergency eject levers or buttons which are small holes in the CD-ROM that you can use to insert a paperclip to get them to open in the case of a jam (Micro buttons on Macs with thin drives). The MyGIG clearly wasn't designed as a computer but I will look and try to find a way to get it to forcefully eject so that you can get that CD back in which is what needs to be done to get your radio going again.

If you cant reinstall that image the only other option will be having to bring the car back to the dealer which might not be so bad cause you will likely get a new radio :) but if it does come to that just tell them that the radio suddenly stopped working and you have no clue why. (Anyone that has a problem with that statement being false, get over it cause dealers frequently lie to the customer to make a sale and this is how the customers get even.. its just the great chain life (or retail sales) :)
