Dodge pre-sells 6000 Challengers Posted Dec 5th 2007 3:30PM by Drew Phillips Filed under: Car Buying, Coupes, Sports/GTs, Dodge Apparently people really want to buy the Dodge Challenger. So much so that 4,300 people put down deposits when Dodge opened ordering on Monday. A total of 6,000 orders have come in since then. If Dodge sticks to its claim of only producing 5,000 Challengers for 2008, then several of those orders will have to wait a year before taking delivery. All of the Challengers ordered will come in the SRT8 variant sporting a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 and a five-speed automatic transmission. Three colors are available - black, silver, and HEMI orange, the latter of which was the color of choice for more than half the orders. Deliveries will start in the Spring of 2008. While the production version will be officially introduced at the Chicago Auto Show in February, it was also hinted that we will see some real "eye candy" later this week. While we wait for that, Allpar has come through once again, as a forum poster there photographed and uploaded the official dealer presales brochure, which shows us teasers of the production car's grille (bye-bye crosshair), fuel filler cap (awesome), wheel, and exhaust outlet. It's all in the gallery below. [Source: Chrysler, Allpar]

Heres an update... quote:
Dodge officials have stated that the initial production run of the Challenger could be as high as 10,000 units. It remains unclear if the large volume of orders influenced Dodge's decision. Challenger production will increase to about 30,000 annual once all models come on line in 2009. The production increase could be a good idea since the automaker predicts that the waiting list will only continue to grow. “This is unprecedented,” said Mark Mallie, Challenger Brand Manager – Dodge Marketing. “Customers were actually coming to us and pushing us, so we thought this was a good time to take pre-sale orders.” The Challenger is available in black, silver or HEMI orange, but HEMI orange has been the most popular by far. “More than half of the orders are HEMI Orange,” Mallie said. “It’s been almost 35 years since the last Challenger, and there’s a lot of interest. There’s a lot of people anxious for it. It’s certainly an iconic muscle car.” Since pricing was announced on Nov. 29, Dodge's website has experienced a 23% boost in traffic, Mallie said.

my friend and I went to one of the smaller local dealers new here in DFW to plop down 5 G's(each) to get two on order and to get lower numbers. We could have had number 2 & 3 but here was the catch from this particular dealer: They werent doing it on a first come first served basis at all, what they planned on doing was making everybody pay sticker(of course) and then we would have sealed bids between us that we would bid "X" amount over sticker with the highest bidders getting theirs first and the extra over sticker going to some local charity(ies). So my buddy and I decided that we will just wait it out till next year if we have too and see what happens. I will have one, but I am not going to play the games to get it. I remember when the PT Cruiser first came out and my buddies owned the dealership and they were selling the damn things for upwards of $10,000 over sticker... I mean really what morons would pay $28,000 for a PT with custom wheels? Well lots as I was amazed to see.

I do not get it. Why people can not wait and not have to pay extra $$ is beyond me. The auto with the small gears would bug the heck out of me. Although I do understand the need for a auto for some people. As for having one of the first ones and thinking it will be worth something later..... You would not be able to drive it at all (keep it under 100 miles) It would take 30+ years

I just want one before they are everywhere... I'll never be able to have my '70's MOPAR dream car so this would be as close to it as I can get. Besides I am getting really tired of driving a truck and want the HEMI power in a 2-door coupe and this is it. I plan on driving the wheels off of mine or at least as far as the $3 a gallon gas will take me.

There's no point to offer a V6 when there's the V8 with MDS
