Thanks for the feedback guys,,,,as for changing the plugs, done that. Had recomendations for both Autolite and NGK, I went with NGK Iridiums. No improvement. And the dealer has flushed everything possible, it's been flush more than a bus station cammode. Still no improvement. The dealer has also ran two diagnostics on it and says the computer says everythink is running right, no misfires.
I think it's a balance problem because it's there at idle and fades out at about 14~1500 RPM. Other than that the engine runs and preforms fine and with my daily driving I can squeeze about 20mpg out of it.
My primary grip is that for $22,000 I shouldn't have to settle for a vehicle that shakes when I'm setting at a stop. I feel like I was sold a defective product. Don't get me wrong I've been a Dodge owner since 1972. One, a B200 van I bought new in '76, I ran until 1999. But I've never had a problem like this with any of them.

I just changed mine at 21k on it and it is smoother. I never had a "rough" idle but not as smooth as other V8s. Also I noticed my TB was pretty dirty I wiped all the cabon out near the butterfly so that might of helped. Anyway change the plugs, heck only 10 bucks and 45 minutes time!

I have a hard time believing your idle will "get better sometimes" due to an improperly balanced engine. Based on the information you have given, the idle would not clear up 20% of the time if it was a mechanical problem (balancing). It would be a constant.
My race motor is balanced, blueprinted, no balance shafts, and poly u motor mounts. It idle's just fine...however, I have severe vibration at idle. The 280 adv. duration cams only add to the vibration. But, it idles. We need to know if you are feeling vibration, or if the motor is idling incorrectly.
My initial thoughts are that you should check the fuel system. Clogged injectors, dirty fuel filter (the sock at the pump), debri in the lines, are all things you should consider in addition to changing the plugs. Also, if timing is off (cam or ignition) this will cause a "rough" idle as well. Now, the likely hood of the cam timing to off should be minimal, but it is possible.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree, Donkeypunch, an embalance would be consistent and my vibration is. Bookerg was the one with the 80% thing going and your suggestions are a good route for him to take. I've already gone through all of that to the point of removing the heads, that is my dealer has and the vibration is still there. Like I said earlier it fades out at about 1500rpm.
I've talked to three different service managers at three different dealers and gotten three different answers, yea, I know, what did I expect,,,right. From the District Manager all the way down to the mechanic in the shop,,,,,,,,nobody knows nothing.

Dropped by the local dealer for my regular Friday visit and went through the ordeal again this time with the service manager and a mechanic, now they want to change the harmonic balancer.
Here's one just for laughs,,,,when I was leaving the service manager said his district manager told him that the Dakotas with a 4.7 would idle rough because it was a small truck with a big engine,,,,,,,,when did 287ci become big?? ....beam me up, Scotty.

I seriously have no idea where they get most of ths schmucks. Mine had a rought idle yesterday. sitting at 800 and then dipping to 300 and back to 800. A few times. It's only got 2,507 miles on it. Already changed the plugs to the 3923's. It runs fine, however. It's just a bit frustrating.

Well guys,,,,,Dodge has given up on my idle problem, which has gotten worse since they started working on it. Last month the "regional tech advisor" came down, ran all the computor test again, broke out the holy water, slung some around and announced that it was "RUNNING AS DESIGNED", and left.
He did promise that if they came up with a fix that they would let me know,,,WOW! Great,,Thanks Guys. And the sevice manager told me that if I wanted to trade it in that I would get the full trade in value because all the dealers knew about the problem,,well, duh,,,What problem? It's "RUNNING AS DESIGNED".
Now I'm really confused,,I guess they designed it to idle with a miss to keep the driver awake at the stop lights.
So I called Dodge customer service for the fourth time and instantly got shot over to an English speaking guy, the Indian dude didn't want to talk to me :(, after reviewing my case he started repeating, "RUNNING AS DESIGNED" -- "RUNNING AS DESIGNED".
So now there's a sign on the side of my Dakota letting everybody know it's "RUNNING AS DESIGNED".
After 38 years of being a loyal Chrysler patron,,,,,,, I've bought my last one.
