Hello Gents,

I'm still building a work sheet for mods. I was looking at aftermarket hood and scoops and it got me thinking. Why not place a scoop (centered) and place a filter directly in front of the throttle body. It looks like there is enough room. Mount the scoop and remove some hood metal and make a box for a drop in filter with a good seal to the hood. Then put the battery where the current air filter box is and create enough room in the trunk for a fullsize spare.

Then an exhaust upgrade.

What do you guys think about the intake idea?

Garry

I got one word for you, HYDROLOCK.  Anyone that modifies the air intake system must take into account torrential rainstorms.  It is VERY DIFFICULT to design an adequate hood scoop/ram-air/CAI that can withstand a torrential rainstorm and not allow water into the engine.  That would not be covered under warranty.
I recommend that you research how manufacturers have allowed for it in other designs, like the ram-air firebirds.  Most of these home designed modifications are for fair weather days only.
Of course I live in Houston which may get heavier rainstorms than someone in say... Nevada, but I guarantee that  the last place you want to break down/destroy an engine, is during a heavy downpour...
The repair would probably consist of bent or broken rods, and or valves.

I am not against tinkering, but you spent a LOT of money on the car, and Daimler spent probably hundreds of millions of dollars designing and optimizing your car.  Do you really think modifying the intake is worth endangering your car and possibly your life?

Of course you may be a better Engineer than Daimler had, and if you are, then I retract the above blabbing...

<slaps self> I'll get off my soapbox now...

And, it would probably take a fair amount of speed to be able to take advantage of any "ram air" effect, if you could really get much at all.  The main advantage, and Mango will correct me here, is to be able to draw in "cool" air rather than the hotter air from under the hood - even with a CAI.

I actually got the idea looking at the Challenger. Look at the pic infront of the throttle body.
http://www.dodge.com/en/2008/challenger/gallery/

IXLR, You might be picturing a couple of good ole boys drinking beer and breaking out the sawsall. I assure you that's not the case. The last thing I want to do is grenade my car.  What I would like to do is let the Hemi breath some nice cool air. I've looked at the shaker kit as well. I  really like the scooped hood better. I was thinking (which is sometimes dangerous) that a direct intake draw would be ideal.

I checked dealer cost on a SRT hood at $1900 I think I'll pass.

Mango, what make is your hood? Does it draw air over to the box?

Thanks,
Garry

65standard, a bro from our sister Magnum section, has created a scoop like your describing.

Mine and several others on the forum have the RAMAir Hood and it does vent to the OEM CAI or they have a stage II that vents to their intake which is more like what you described.  Dave is correct the only advantage you really get is drawing cooler air from outside the engine compartment. There are other manufactures as well.

The SRT8 hood doesn't vent to the intake it vents over the headers for cooling.

Thanks Mango,

This is close to what I was thinking https://www.ramairhood.com/store/ProdImages/charger%20hood%20underside%20II.jpg that's a sharp looking functional hood. I run 80-85 all day long so I;m thinking this may be the ticket.

Jezz Dave, you made my car blush

I get a kick out of seeing another Chargers on the road, which happens more often now, the body lines of the car just make it stand out from others.

Now that's what I'm talking about Mango. What is the veiw from inside? Is there a gap at the back in the line of vision from the scoop? Also you have the hoodpins did you get any hood play with out them? One more question. Did you get it painted or order it that way?

Thanks,
Garry

I'll try to answer that...

The view from inside, well you can see the hood LOL j/k... The scoop is raised so of course it cuts a little of the vision down, not bad, it takes a little time to adjust to it. I'll get a pic from inside and post it up so you can see.

Not sure about this question but will think about it "the gap...in the line of vison from the scoop"

There is no play with them out... well I take that back it does bucket up/down a little at high speeds.

The hood was ordered painted and the match was very good.

Mango,

What kind of gap do you see when looking at the top of the hood were the wipers are? I hope that explains it right. Is there a gap in the hood to wear you can see the engine or does it sit pretty tight?

Thanks,
Garry

Oh no, can't see the engine.  It sits tight just like the OEM hood.
