64' fury help?

Hi Guy!

I'm new to the forum and have a few questions about my latest addition to my garage, a 64' Sport Fury 383/auto!

I found the Fury on the weekend parked in an old lady's garage, It was her daughters car, the car had a frame off resto in 99-00' and was parked in 01' due to a divorce, tha daughter signed it over to the mother so hubby couldn't get it, and to make a log story short I picked it up on the weekend! Yay me!

When I had it towed home, the tranny was almost dry, I added 3 quarts but am having a hard time reading the dip stick, when i check the stick with the engine idling and the tranny in neutral nothing shows on the stick, when in park the level is at the full mark, same when the engine is turned off! Do I need to keep adding fluid till it reads full while in neutral?

With the tranyy at the full mark when in park, I drove her to the corner gas station to fill her up, the gauge read just above 'E' But she took less the 5 gallons before she over flowed, the guage still read the same, so I'm assuming the guage is busted, while driving her i noted the steering to be loose, the is a 1/4 turn worth of play in the wheel! Is that normal, If not, how would I tighten the steering up a bit?

And lastly what is a good source of parts?

Sounds like you got a nice score there. I always liked the styling of the 64 Sport Fury- it's probably my favorite of the early B bodies. Not sure what might be going on with your tranny- 3 quarts should have brought it to where you could see something on the dipstick, as long as it's the right one. Sounds like your gas gauge is shot, as you already surmised. For parts, most mechanical stuff is readily available. Body and trim pieces are harder to come by- Jim Kramer is a good place for early B body stuff.

If it's power steering, it will be very light and feel loose, if it's not something your used to, although a full quarter turn of the wheel is a little much. Check your front end components (tie rod ends, pittman arm, etc) to make sure there all tight. Post some pics of the car when you get a chance.

Thanks for the help! I'll post some picks as soon as I can get some decent shots there are some here Fury pics but they were taken in poor lighting inside.

This is going to be a long winter, it's only October but I can't wait till spring!

Your in luck as far as the steering stuff goes because parts up to 1972 will fit. The transmission takes a special filter because it has two pumps. The Fram number is FT 1015. Rockauto.com has them. The level is checked idling in neutral when hot.

My guess on the gas gauge would be the sending unit within the tank. Having sat a while, the float will tend to "stick" thus proving a false reading to the dash gauge. May not be bad idea to drop and have tank "boiled" out (usually a good radiator shop can perform). Sending units are available through Year One or even the local NAPA guys.
