Magnum Dreams

Derrick Hayes has always been a Mopar fanatic, working his way up from a modded Avenger to a Magnum R/T wagon. Like many, he was attracted to the Hemi-powered wagon, a car that offered up muscle car might and serious practicality in one tasty package. Sadly, after spending a good bit of time modding that Magnum, he was cut off by a tractor-trailer on the highway and completely totaled it. But as you can see from his recent Hot Rod feature, that wouldn't be the end of his Magnum dreams - not by a long shot.

Blank Canvas

While a wreck this bad might understandably scare someone away from the hobby, it only solidified Hayes' desire to have the best of the best. So this time around, he went out and bought a Magnum SRT-8 as the canvas for his idea of the ultimate build.

Getting Serious

Hayes started out with the typical visual stuff he had focused on before, however. Things like new wheels and extensive airbrush work. But things got serious when he paid a visit to High Horsepower Performance (HHP) in Smyrna, Delaware, a company that also sponsored his build.

Building a Monster

In his own words, Hayes wanted to "build a monster." Thus, HHP knew that he was going to need a fortified bottom end to handle what was coming. So they went with a prepped 6.1-liter Hemi block fitted with forged internals before tacking on several power adders.

Magical Mark

In addition to a custom ground cam, the Hemi makes serious power thanks to the wicked combination of a Procharger blower and ZEX nitrous system. Altogether, the monstrous Hemi pushes out well over 1,000 horsepower.

Beefy Drivetrain

The rest of the drivetrain is equally beefy in order to handle that kind of power. It consists of a NAG1 Super Pro Series five-speed automatic transmission fitted with a ProTorque 4,400-stall speed converter, a one-piece carbon driveshaft, and 3,06-geared limited-slip rear diff.

Safety First

After what happened with his last Magnum, Hayes wasn't going to play around with safety this time. So he fitted the inside of his new ride with a 10-point roll cage. Auto Meter gauges keep him updated on what's going on under the hood, and there's a nice sound system in case he gets tired of hearing the Procharger whine. Like that's ever going to happen.

Short Attention Span

The exterior of Hayes' wild ride apparently changes like the wind but is currently wrapped in Avery Lagoon Blue Matte Metallic. He admits that he changes the look every so often when he "gets tired of it," which is a great benefit of vinyl wrap.

Rolling Stock

Currently, the car rides on Amani Lorenzo Concave wheels wrapped in Lexani Performance tires, which are also wrapped a different contrasting color every time the exterior changes. Personally, we're digging the car's current iteration, though we're guessing Hayes is probably already contemplating a change.

Beltway Bully

Pushing out over 900 hp at the wheels, it's no wonder that Hayes' dream Magnum has earned the name "Beltway Bully." Despite weighing well over 4,000 pounds and riding on tires that aren't nearly as sticky as drag radials, we're guessing it didn't earn that nickname by losing races, either!
