few weeks ago, I referred to the Avenger previously used in NASCAR as
being "Ultra vanilla". Evidently Ma Mopar took offense to my comment,
as on the opening day of the 2009 SEMA Show the indoor Mopar display
brought us the debut of the new Dodge Avenger pro stock body and this
new car is anything but vanilla.

The car was displayed in the
familiar Mopar team scheme with the giant blue M and blue/black/white
finish, proudly sporting Allen Johnson's name on the sides of the car.

However, I spoke last night with a contact within the Chrysler
Corporation who told me that during the SEMA Show some other Mopar
drivers such as V. Gaines stopped by to check out the new Avenger
body. My contact told me that it based on the initial reaction from
the drivers, it looks like sometime during the 2010 season we will see
a full shift from the Dodge Stratus body that has been used for the
past 6 years to the new Avenger body. This is all based on things
going smoothly early on for the teams using the Dodge Avenger bodies,
and there was no time frame from my contact as to when we can expect to
see more teams using the new body.

        In the meantime, I'm
forced to eat my words, as Mopar has shown just how un-vanilla the
Avenger can be but Dodge has proven that if they make a car a rear
wheel drive and add a Hemi, the car will do well for itself. It's a
shame that they don't give cars like the Avenger any balls in
production form but that is an entirely different discussion.

Opinions
about Dodges production lineup aside, the new pro stock body looks
great and is supposed to be aerodynamic (and legal for competition) so
with the NASCAR end of the Mopar Racing teams struggling it looks like
the company is still making strides to stay competitive in the pro drag
racing circuit.

Dodge followed suit with the Dodge Ram Bianco. The Bianco is intended
to be a sporty luxury truck, but many of the styling cues are taken

consider hacking apart your Jeep to make room for 40" tires a little
work.

Sure, the Lower Forty might not be the ideal commuter
vehicle, but it does make for one bad ass concept and in the end, it is
a great deal more realistic than the twin Hemi powered Hurricane
concept.

events like SEMA I'm always very excited to see what Mopar has in store
for me.

This year, I have to admit that the indoor Mopar display was a little bare, although cars like the Challenger 1320 (click here for more info) and the new Dodge Avenger pro stock car (more info coming soon!) made the display worth the time.

But
there was still Mopar Alley. The area connecting the Central Hall and
South Hall runs you through a parking lot and atop a busy overpass, but
for years now Mopar has bridged the gap with a variety of new and
vintage Mopars - both privately owned and featured vehicles owned by
Chrysler Corporation.

new models, along with the winners of their 2009 Top Eliminator
contest. These six vehicles were chosen from a large group of entries
and were selected as the winners of Mopar's Top Eliminator contests
across the country at events like the Woodward Dream Cruise, and the
prize was the chance to be featured at one of the world's most visited
automotive trade shows.

Click here to check out Part 1 of the Mopar Alley Gallery, and click here for Mopar Alley Gallery part 2, with all

Yesterday evening, Speedfactory contacted me and confirmed that I have indeed seen this Challenger before, and based on my first sighting of it...it is one great looking Challenger. This will be the debut of the 440 Hemi Challenger in this form, although this car has been displayed before. In August of 2009, this Speedfactory Challenger was displayed alongside a wicked 10 second Speedfactory Charger at the Mopar Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.
Along with the big power, the Speedfactory 440 Hemi Challenger features a carbon fiber hood, Speedfactory badging and stripes, and a set of black BBS wheels. Inside, a full compliment of Speedfactory trim items, from the door panels to the seat skins, set apart the interior of this 700 horsepower Challenger.

Check out the gallery in the original aricle from High Horsepower Photography for more pictures of the Speedfactory 440 Hemi Challenger as it looked in August by clicking here, and stay tuned to the Detroit Autos Examiner for live coverage of the re-debut of the 440 Hemi Challenger next week at SEMA!

Click here for a full SEMA preview!

Mopar camp offered their first teasers of what to expect in their
display. Not surprisingly, the first four announced vehicles for the
SEMA Show include a Dodge Ram and a Dodge Challenger, along with a pair
of wild Jeep concepts.

The two Jeeps to be featured at
the Mopar SEMA Show display, the Jeep Wrangler Overland and Jeep Lower
Forty are both based on the popular Wrangler. The Mopar Dodge Ram
Bianco is based on a production Dodge Ram 1500 Sport, and the Mopar
Dodge Challenger 1320 (the first of many Challengers I expect to see at
SEMA) is actually based on the Dodge Challenger Track Pak rather than a
production model.

Vehicle: Exploring a Street-legal Drag Pak Challenger
The Dodge Challenger 1320 began life as a Mopar Drag Pak Dodge Challenger. The
current Drag Pak option is a light-weight, stripped-down, race-only,
special-order version of the Dodge Challenger designed for competitive drag
racing.

For the street-legal design, Mopar's
design team took the vehicle back to its roots with styling reminiscent of
vintage Mopar muscle, updated with today's technology. The Dodge Challenger
1320 image vehicle, named for the 1,320 feet on a quarter-mile drag strip,
features Mopar's 426 cubic-inch, all-aluminum, HEMI® V-8 crate engine that
generates 556 horsepower. The engine is equipped with unique Mopar-designed
valve covers and a dress-up kit. Mopar's long-tube headers and exhaust system
allow the cubic inches to breathe. Electric cutouts allow the exhaust to bypass
the muffler system, which exits through custom side pipes for added rumble at
the dragstrip. Power is put to the ground via a six-speed manual transmission
through a custom Dynatrac rear housing with Mopar Dana 60 internals and a
selectable, ARB locking differential. Mopar police wheels, widened in the rear,
are strapped with Nitto street-legal drag radials to provide extra grip at launch.
A four-corner, adjustable coil-over kit is provided by Mopar as an option for
the Dodge Challenger. This system improves the handling of the vehicle under
extreme loads of 556 horsepower and 540 lb.-ft. of torque.

Following Mopar's high-impact color
heritage, the design team layered the 1320 in Acidic Hue, a non-metallic yellow
paint and added matte black graphics. The body is lightened with the following
carbon-fiber components from Mopar's design team and Seibon:

• Bulged hood with HEMI scoop

The interior is equipped with bare
necessities--Dodge Viper seats, a sport steering wheel and a Hurst shifter. The
rear seat, center console and radio have been removed in order to reduce
vehicle weight and maintain the 1320's no-nonsense theme.

Mopar Dodge Ram Bianco Image
Vehicle: A Stylish, Luxury Pickup Truck
The Dodge Ram Bianco started life as a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport with a
5.7-liter HEMI V-8. The Dodge Ram is modified to reflect an upscale
feel and appearance with the aid of Mopar performance parts and accessories.
Colors, textures and accessories are combined in a manner that showcases the
sophisticated side of the Dodge Ram 1500.

Exterior modifications include a
Mopar hard tonneau that adds a classic, sporty appearance. The inside of the
truck bed features Mopar's bed rug--a plush, yet washable carpet. For the
exterior, a Mopar body kit and modified Mopar fender flares give a unique,
sophisticated look. The stance is aided by a Ground Force lowering kit that not
only lowers the vehicle, but also provides excellent ride and handling. The
Dodge Ram Bianco is layered in several coats of Arctic Ice pearl paint that
give it a rich appearance. Holding true to the upscale theme, Mopar's 22-inch
wheels are painted in a matching, high-contrast design. Performance upgrades
include a Mopar cold-air intake and a throaty Mopar dual exhaust with just
enough growl to let you know there is something powerful under the hood.

The exterior theme continues through
the interior. White and black Katzkin seats with matching door trim set the
stage for a high-class ride. Piano Black and Arctic Ice accents add to the
luxurious theme. For sound, Mopar contributed a Kicker audio system consisting
of an audio amplifier, a powerful subwoofer and upgraded speakers.

Mopar Jeep Wrangler Overland Image
Vehicle: A Stop-anywhere, Camp-anywhere Jeep
The Jeep Wrangler Overland is
perfect for those craving travel and adventure. The Mopar design team took a
2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and turned it into a mobile "on-the-go"
self-contained campsite.

To increase cargo capacity for
hauling gear, the Jeep Wrangler Overland's rear seats are replaced with a
large, flat, rubberized utility floor. Mounted to the cargo rack is an all-new
ARB two-person Simpson II rooftop-mounted tent and touring awning. The interior
of the Jeep Wrangler Overland features water-resistant Mopar front-seat covers,
rugged Mopar slush mats, a Daystar dash bin and lower switch panel that powers
added accessories.

Enhancing off-road travel is an
American Expedition Vehicles' (AEV), Nth Degree, 3-inch suspension lift and a
Full Traction rear sway bar. The lift allows aggressive 35-inch tires mounted
on 17-inch steel Mopar winter/off-road wheels to fit under the Jeep. Additional
off-road protection at the front and rear is provided by AEV steel bumpers and
for added security, a Warn 9.5ti winch.

In order to prepare the Jeep
Wrangler Overland for desert duty, an AEV Jeep Wrangler heat-reduction hood and
snorkel kit is fitted to the vehicle. Mopar windshield-mounted off-road lights
and Daystar bumper-mounted lights provide additional lighting for nighttime and
off-road driving.

Mopar Jeep Lower Forty Image
Vehicle: An Extreme Trail Rig with 40-inch Tires
The Jeep "Lower Forty" takes the Jeep Wrangler platform to a new extreme. The
vehicle is equipped with massive 40-inch x 13.5-inch tires mounted on Mopar's
20-inch forged-aluminum wheels. Mopar added aggressive wheels and tires to a
stock, two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon without the use of a suspension lift. The
team's goal was to achieve added ground clearance without dramatically altering
the vehicle's center of gravity. The team removed copious amounts of body metal
in order to provide room for 40-inch meats. Three inches are chopped from the
windshield frame and a 10-degree rake is added.

Custom front and rear fender flares
are 1-inch wider and are located 4 inches higher than a stock Jeep Wrangler. A
new one-piece carbon-fiber hood with a Jeep CJ-like power dome and an all-new
drop-down tailgate stamped with the "Jeep" logo are added to complete the
exterior design.

On the interior, an all-new roll
cage is neatly integrated into the body tub and tied directly into the frame
rails. The spare tire is relocated to the cargo floor and a custom cargo rack,
supplied by Poly Performance, holds extra gear. Once all body modifications
were completed, the exterior received a fresh coat of Red Eye No. 3 paint, a
custom color developed by Mopar.

Custom touches throughout the
interior include a color-matched center console and instrument panel. Seats are
re-covered with Mopar's Katzkin leather package in a two-tone scheme. Replacing
the carpet is a durable, spray-in truck-bed liner. Rugged Mopar floor mats
complete the theme.

Mechanical upgrades came directly
out of the Mopar catalog. The Jeep "Lower Forty" features an all-new 5.7-liter
HEMI® V-8 engine and a Getrag 238 six-speed manual transmission. Powertrain
installations were handled by Burnsville Off-Road using an AEV 5.7-liter HEMI
V-8 conversion kit.

The Mopar-supplied Dana 44 front
axle and a Dana 60 rear axle, fitted with 5.38 gears and ARB air lockers, were
assembled by Dynatrac.

Mopar Brand
Dodge Car and Dodge Ram vehicles - a direct connection that no other
aftermarket parts company can provide.

race-ready Dodge and Plymouth "package cars" equipped with special
high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of "special parts" for super stock

base vehicle of this concept was not a production vehicle, but rather
the track-only Dodge Challenger Track Pak and in the artist's rendering
the Challenger 1320 shows off a yellow (they call is Acidic Hue) and
flat black scheme. A large hood scoop, widened police style wheels
wrapped in Nitto drag radials, and special graphics help to define the
exterior but the real news about the Dodge Challenger 1320 is the
drivetrain. Mopar began with an all-aluminum 426 cubic inch Hemi crate
motor decorated with Mopar valve covers.

This 556 horsepower Hemi is
equipped with a set of Mopar long tube headers and a high flow exhaust
system to help the 426cu engine breath, and for better flow at the
track, the Challenger 1320 features electric exhaust cutouts that open
to bypass the exhaust system. The power from the Hemi is sent through
a 6-speed manual transmission into a custom locking Dana 60 rear
differential, although Chrysler doesn't mention what gears will be in
that Dana 60. Inside of the Mopar Dodge Challenger 1320, we expect to
find the bare essentials. The rear seat area, sound system, and center
console have been removed to keep the weight down, and a set of Dodge
Viper seats add comfort and class.

Mopar Dodge Challenger 1320 Image Vehicle: Exploring a Street-legal Drag Pak Challenger
The
Dodge Challenger 1320 began life as a Mopar Drag Pak Dodge Challenger.
The current Drag Pak option is a light-weight, stripped-down,
race-only, special-order version of the Dodge Challenger designed for
competitive drag racing.
For the street-legal design, Mopar's design
team took the vehicle back to its roots with styling reminiscent of
vintage Mopar muscle, updated with today's technology. The Dodge
Challenger 1320 image vehicle, named for the 1,320 feet on a
quarter-mile drag strip, features Mopar's 426 cubic-inch, all-aluminum,
HEMI® V-8 crate engine that generates 556 horsepower. The engine is
equipped with unique Mopar-designed valve covers and a dress-up kit.
Mopar's long-tube headers and exhaust system allow the cubic inches to
breathe. Electric cutouts allow the exhaust to bypass the muffler
system, which exits through custom side pipes for added rumble at the
dragstrip. Power is put to the ground via a six-speed manual
transmission through a custom Dynatrac rear housing with Mopar Dana 60
internals and a selectable, ARB locking differential. Mopar police
wheels, widened in the rear, are strapped with Nitto street-legal drag
radials to provide extra grip at launch. A four-corner, adjustable
coil-over kit is provided by Mopar as an option for the Dodge
Challenger. This system improves the handling of the vehicle under
extreme loads of 556 horsepower and 540 lb.-ft. of torque.
Following
Mopar's high-impact color heritage, the design team layered the 1320 in
Acidic Hue, a non-metallic yellow paint and added matte black graphics.
The body is lightened with the following carbon-fiber components from
Mopar's design team and Seibon:
• Bulged hood with HEMI scoop
• Front spoiler
• Grille panel/headlamp surround
The
interior is equipped with bare necessities--Dodge Viper seats, a sport
steering wheel and a Hurst shifter. The rear seat, center console and
radio have been removed in order to reduce vehicle weight and maintain
the 1320's no-nonsense theme.

Mopar Dodge Ram Bianco is the most practical vehicle of this first
batch of teasers, and this concept began its life as a 2009 Dodge Ram
1500 Sport quad cab powered by a 5.7L Hemi. The goal of the Mopar
designers was to emphasize luxury and high class, shown by the included
artist's rendering. A hard tonneau cover, Mopar body kit, Mopar fender
flares, and Mopar 22-inch wheels help this Arctic Ice pearl Ram stand
out in a crowd, and a Mopar cold air intake and dual exhaust system
give the Ram a little more bark and bite. Inside, the luxury feel is
obvious with white and black Kaztkin leather seats and a matching color

this could make for a great competitor to Ford's F150 Platinum. I

modifications include a Mopar hard tonneau that adds a classic, sporty

Both of those models followed the trend set by the 2005 Ford Mustang. Along the same train of thought, the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 brought back popular names with a lesser degree of retro styling.
The Magnum was originally introduced in 1978 as a large yet sporty 2-door luxury coupe as the Chrysler Corporation struggled to keep the rear-wheel drive V8 coupe alive, but the trend towards more fuel efficient compacts took over and the Magnum was replaced by the slightly smaller Dodge Mirada. The 1978-1979 Magnum are collector's items due to their rarity and fading muscle car era styling, but the sort of cult-following it received was still a surprise when Dodge announced a reincarnation in 2004. Even more surprising, was the fact that the car that once embodied luxury and performance in a coupe returned as the first station wagon offered by Dodge since the early 1990s. The station wagon, which had been very popular in the United States until the minivan and sport-utility vehicle took over the family vehicle market, had began to look like a more viable option to a new car buyer who wanted better fuel efficiency than an SUV and a sportier feel than is offered by minivans. The 2005 Dodge Magnum offered fuel economy, a roomy interior, and a fairly sporty exterior and the return to the large American station wagon was an instant success.

The 2005 Dodge Magnum

The Dodge Magnum is a station wagon intended to be a versatile vehicle for hauling cargo and people, but Dodge made sure that it had resurrected some of the spirit of the original Magnum as well. That spirit was provided by a lineup of engines that began with a mild V6 that focused strictly on economy and ended with the return of the first Hemi engine in a Dodge car. The Dodge Magnum SE came equipped with a 2.7L V6 making 190 horsepower, and someone who wanted a bit more power without compromising efficiency could select the Magnum SXT, which came with a 250hp 3.5L V6. The engineers wanted the Magnum to be as functional as possible and more capable in harsh weather, the SXT offering an all wheel drive option. The AWD SXT sports a Mercedes Benz 5-speed automatic transmission with the AutoStick feature, while the RWD V6 model comes with the standard 4-speed automatic transmission.

Magnum buyers who were a little more concerned with power than economy could select the Magnum R/T, and with its 5.7L, 340 horsepower Hemi engine featuring Chrysler's Multiple Displacement System (MDS). The R/T packed a punch, with quarter mile times in the low 14 second range, and still offered drivers around 30mpg in real world tests on the highway. Like the SXT, the R/T also features an all wheel drive package, and all of the R/T models come with the AutoStick 5-speed transmission.

The SRT-8 is Introduced

There were just the three trimlines offered at the introduction of the Magnum, rumors of a performance model were confirmed in late 2005 as the Dodge Magnum SRT-8 was introduced. The heart of the SRT-8 was the 6.1L Hemi making an advertised 425hp, although tests have proven that number to be lower. The Street and Racing Technology (SRT) division did more than just pack their rendition of the Magnum full of power. The suspension was redesigned to allow for greater horsepower. To stop this muscular wagon, performance Brembo brakes are tucked under each of the 20"SRT-designed aluminum wheels. The Dodge Magnum SRT-8 also wears a more aggressive skin, with specially designed front and rear fascias, along with a unique sport interior with race inspired seats that offer a comfortable ride, but also a firm position during spirited driving. The modifications made to the SRT model of Dodge's sport wagon allowed the car to dash down the quarter mile in the low 13 to high 12 second range; as fast as the 2005 Mustang GT.

The Dodge Magnum wagon proved to be a popular alternative to the family-friendly SUVs and minivans of the day. Offered on Chrysler LX platform which is shared by the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Charger, the Magnum came out of the gate very strong but sales faded as the 300C and Charger proved to be the more popular selection as they are all essentially the same vehicle with the exception of the added cargo room in the Magnum. Thanks to its sinister almost hearse-like appearance, the Magnum became a popular car for hot-rodders who needed a practical family vehicle who wanted something with style and power. There would be no real changes during the 2006 or 2007 model years, but for the 2008 model year, Dodge unveiled a slightly more aggressive exterior design focused around a new front end. However, sales continued to disappoint new corporate owner Cerberus, and in 2007 it was announced that the 2008 model year would be the last for the Dodge Magnum. The Chrysler 300 is offered as a wagon around the world, and in Canada, so there are speculations that with the upcoming refresh of the popular 300, there will be a US market wagon, but those prove to be nothing more than rumors at this point.

Much like the original Dodge Magnum, the 2005 to 2008 Dodge Magnum wagon was a very popular vehicle for its time, but market trends and increased fuel prices raised concerns about efficiency and this negatively impacted the sales of both generations of the model name. It is unclear whether the Magnum name will return to the lineup, but in its short 4 years the Magnum wagon has secured itself in history as one of the most powerful American made wagons ever.

- Patrick Rall

Do you drive a Magnum or are thinking about getting one? This decision to split the cars and trucks is similar to a Fiat
corporate split headed by Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne, and
that split helped to stabilize the then-struggling European auto
giant. Mr. Marchionne hopes that this split of the Dodge brand will
allow for a better focus on improving the Dodge Car brand, as Dodge's
cars (as well as Chrysler's) have been suffering in sales. The Dodge
trucks, on the other hand, are among the best selling on the market,
and this new Dodge RAM brand will offer Chrysler Group a chance to show
positive numbers during these difficult times for automakers. There is
also the concern of the new CAFÉ laws looming over the industry, and
there could be some benefit to Chrysler to have the less fuel efficient
trucks separated from the cars to improve the overall efficiency rating
of the brand.

The downside to this new corporate layout is
that some analysts say that this could be a way of Dodge liquidating
assets associated with the poorer selling models, specifically the
Dodge cars. For the time being, this appears to be an attempt to help
get the entire company back on track, and the next few months promise
to be interesting, as the new Chrysler Group LLC front office decide
which models need to go in order to get the company back on its feet.

Subscribe

on Quad Cab models with the 5.7L Hemi and 3.92 gears.

Inside of the 2010 Dodge Ram 1500, there is an optional 506 watt
surround sound stereo system for audiophiles, along with I-pod control
with a glove box connection. A tire pressure monitoring system is
another added feature, and to make the Ram a little more capable there
is an integrated trailer brake controller. This option was offered
first by Ford on the 2009 F150, and is a great addition for those who
do any towing.

There were rumors that 2010 "mule" Dodge Rams were equipped with 400+
horsepower variants of the 5.7L Hemi but it appears that for now they
will remain at 390hp and 407 lb-ft of torque but the Ram is still the
most aerodynamic and one of the most powerful trucks in its class.

- Patrick Rall

The Ram's strength and toughness are never in question. Does the addition of an improved sound system, I-Pod connectivity, electronic fuel and tire monitor, and trailer brake control make it the perfect truck? At the very least, is it pushing the balance of comfort and ability in the right direction? Anything missing?

Need to talk and read a lot more on Rams? Click here to find all the threads!
The 2010 Dodge Ram 2500's Power Wagon name was introduced on a military truck chassis in the 1940's, lasting until the late 60's. The Power Wagon returned next in the form of a trimline for the Dodge Ram in 2005. The 2500 series Dodge Ram finally gets the "new" front end (previously only found on the 1500 models), and so the Power Wagon rides again strong as ever.

The 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Power Wagon features the 5.7L Hemi V8 mated to
a 5-speed automatic transmission, feeding power to the ground via a set
of 4.56 gears. Electric locking front and rear differentials, electric
front sway bar disconnect, special springs, and Bilstein mono-tube
shocks make the Power Wagon one of the most capable factory equipped
off road trucks on the market - able to lift one tire 32" off the
ground while keeping the other three planted. Alcoa 17" forged
aluminum rims are wrapped in BFG All Terrain 33" tires, and with the
suspension goodies and underbody skid plates, the Power Wagon can go
almost anywhere. Should the Power Wagon come across a buried Toyota
along the trails, the 2010 2500 Power Wagon is equipped with a Warn
12,000 lb winch and 90 foot cable.

New for 2010, the Power Wagon is offered only as a full crew cab body
style, making it 9" longer in the wheel base than the previous Power
Wagon. As mentioned, the exterior of the 2500 and 3500 get the front
ends found on the 2009 Ram 1500s, so not only is the 2010 Dodge Ram
2500 one of the most powerful trucks on the road, but it is also one of
the most aerodynamic.

The 2500 and 3500 series truck class is a tight one, with Chevy, GMC,
and Ford all offering worthy competitors but the 2010 Dodge Ram with
the 5.7L Hemi or the awesome 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel will continue
its dominance of the class.

- Patrick Rall

If you're going Ram 2500 and up anytime soon, is there any reason not to go for the Power Wagon? What would hold you back? See any drawbacks in going for the option? Do you see any competition in other super and heavy duty lines? Where else might you go for your next "big job" truck?

Need to read and talk about the Ram a lot more?
