Overview

The 2009 Dodge Charger is a full-size, four-door sedan that makes a bold
design statement and backs it up with serious horsepower. A wide range
of models is available, but all are comfortable cruisers, offering
drivers a friendly haven from traffic and bumpy freeways.

The model line ranges from the basic but entertaining 2.7-liter Charger
SE to the high-performance 425-hp SRT8. Between them are 3.5-liter V6
and 5.7-liter V8 models. The 3.5-liter V6 delivers entirely adequate
performance for the mid-grade SXT model, while the V8s generate
thrilling acceleration performance and make all the right noises.
All-wheel drive is available for all-weather capability.

The Charger illustrates just how multi-talented and accomplished
today's high-performance cars are compared to the unidimensional hot
rods of yesteryear. The Charger has all the pavement-ripping,
gut-thumping power of the old muscle cars, but it's packaged with
modern creature comforts and tempered by handling competency. With
either V8 engine, the Charger is fast in a straight line, and it
corners better than those muscle cars of the past. However, it is large
and heavy, measuring more than 16 feet in length and tipping the scales
near two tons, so it's not as nimble as a sports car, or even a pony
car.

On the inside, the Charger has plenty of room for a family of five, but
the interior is largely plastic and the sightlines are partially
obstructed in several directions. Buyers can opt for several
entertainment features that will pacify both the kids and the adults.
And if you need to carry cargo, the Charger has a large trunk with a
handy split-folding rear seat.

The Charger used to be the only V8-powered large American car on the
market, but it now faces competition from the Pontiac G8 and an
improved Ford Taurus. The Charger offers a lot of room and great
straight line power, but it appears to be falling behind the
competition in driving dynamics and interior quality.

For 2009, the Charger gets a new taillight design, the 5.7-liter Hemi
V8 gains power, and all-wheel-drive models get Active Transfer Case
with Front-Axle Disconnect. SE models add alloy wheels, additional
interior chrome trim and more equipment, while the SRT8 model adds more
standard equipment, a retuned suspension, and new calibrations for the
anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control systems. The SRT8
also adds a Super Bee package. LED lighting becomes standard for the
front cup holders on all models, and the MyGIG hard-drive radio is now
called UConnect Tunes and UConnect GPS when ordered with navigation
system. Front side and curtain side air bags now optional instead of
standard on most models.

Model Lineup

The base Dodge Charger SE has a 178-hp 2.7-liter V6 and a
four-speed automatic transmission. The SXT uses a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6.
The rear-drive SXT gets the four-speed automatic, while the
all-wheel-drive (AWD) SXT is mated to a five-speed automatic
transmission with Dodge's AutoStick manual shift gate. R/T models have
a 368-hp 5.7-liter V8 and the five-speed AutoStick automatic. SRT8
models have a 425-hp 6.1-liter V8 and the AutoStick.

The SE ($23,895) comes standard with cloth upholstery; air
conditioning; interior air filter; cruise control; tilt/telescoping
steering wheel; driver and passenger lumbar adjustment; AM/FM/CD stereo
with auxiliary input jack; power windows, locks and mirrors; remote
keyless entry; and P215/65R17 tires on aluminum wheels.

and rear spoilers and P245/45R20 tires on aluminum wheels with black
accents. The Daytona package ($4475) has the same equipment, plus
remote engine starting, a black grille, body color engine cover,
special paint, a performance exhaust system and a special axle ratio.

The SRT8 ($38,670) adds dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic
headlights, remote engine starting, interior air filter, heated front
seats, a Reconfigurable Display with performance pages,
performance-tuned suspension, sport bucket seats, functional hood
scoop, rear spoiler, a reprogrammed ESC system, Brembo brakes, Goodyear
Supercar F1 tires on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels and a 180-mph
speedometer. The Super Bee buzz model package ($1900) comes with Hemi
Orange paint, a serialized dash plaque, a special wheel design, silver
Brembo brake calipers, UConnect Tunes hard-drive radio, orange seat
accents, and hood and rear quarter panel decals.

Options include the Popular Equipment package for the SXT ($2405) with
leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a
leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, heated front seats, a
power passenger seat, a 276-watt Boston Acoustics sound system,
automatic headlights and bodyside moldings, a slightly firmer touring
suspension and P225/60R18 tires. A Popular Equipment package for R/T

front side airbags, curtain side airbags, UConnect Phone wireless cell
phone link, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, bodyside moldings and
P215/60R17 self-sealing tires. Electronic stability control with
traction control and anti-lock brakes are an option for the SE model
($1025). The UConnect Multimedia Suite for SXT and R/T models ($1550)
comes with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, UConnect wireless cell
phone link and GPS system that includes a 30-gigabyte hard drive and a
navigation system with real-time traffic. The UConnect Tunes hard-drive
radio is available separately ($650). Option Group II for the SRT8
($1195) adds a 6CD changer, an alarm and a Kicker sound system with a
200 watt subwoofer and a 322-watt amplifier. Option Group III for SRT8
($1635) adds UConnect GPS, UConnect Phone and an auto-dimming rearview
mirror. Also available are a sunroof ($950), a rear DVD entertainment
system with Sirius Backseat TV for R/T and SRT8 ($1460), Xenon
headlights ($695), and a rear spoiler for SXT ($225). The Super Track
Pack ($400) for the R/T includes summer performance tires, stiffer
springs, load-leveling shocks, a higher numerical axle ratio, sportier
electronic stability control calibrations and higher performance
steering and brakes.

Safety features that come standard on all Charger models include
two-stage front airbags, tire-pressure monitor, and rear-seat LATCH
child safety seat anchors. Antilock brakes with brake assist, traction
control and electronic stability control, are standard on all but SE.
Front side airbags and curtain side airbags for both seating rows are
optional for all models. All-wheel drive is available for SXT and R/T
models.

Walkaround

The Dodge Charger recalls the 1966 Dodge Coronet. Despite its fastback, two-door hardtop styling, the old Charger was somewhat blocky, with a squared-off front end, superficially sculpted slab sides and an equally vertical backside. There was the barest hint of a so-called Coke bottle look, with the body sides slightly pinched in about where there would have been a B-pillar. Not until the 1968 model year was any attention paid to moving the car rapidly through the air with minimal disturbance. The 2008 Charger starts at much the same place on the automotive styling evolutionary curve.

The same design team that parented the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum designed the Charger. The Charger is built on the same platform as those two, but is three inches longer overall.

With this legacy, the upright silhouette comes as no surprise. The front end tilts forward as if it's leaning into the wind, specifically to recall the brutish, pre-aero-age styling of its muscle car era namesake.

Dominating the front of the car are the trademark Dodge crosshairs, chromed on the SXT and R/T, body-color in the SE and SRT8, and flat black on the Daytona. Compound halogen headlights peer out under hooded, almost scowling brows. A thin, trifurcated air intake slices across the lower portion of the front bumper. The Daytona and SRT8 wear a flat-black chin spoiler. Fog lamps on the SXT and higher models fill small, sculpted insets at the lower corners.

From the side, the demi-fastback roofline and glasshouse look more grafted onto the somewhat fulsome body than a natural extension of the overall styling theme, as if the designer were trying to make a sedan look like a coupe. The beltline arcs softly back from the headlights, where it droops slightly, to about the midpoint of the rear side window, then kicks up over the rear quarter panel, visually bulking up the car's already hefty haunches.

The rear perspective shows a tall, almost vertical backside, with large taillights draped over the upper corners. A modest, Kamm-like lip stretches across the trailing edge of an expansive trunk lid, atop which sits a lift-suppressing spoiler on the Daytona and SRT8. A recess in the bumper holds the license plate. On the SE and SXT a single exhaust tip exits beneath the right-hand side, while the V8-powered models sport chrome-tipped, muscle car-idiom, dual exhausts.

Interior Features

The fabric-covered seats in the standard Dodge Charger are comfortable, with adequate thigh support and side bolstering. The suede-trimmed sport seats that come in the SRT8 have more pronounced bolsters, which is good for those rare times when a twisty two-lane beckons, but not as good for climbing in and out of the car every day.

Visibility from the driver's seat is compromised by safety measures and styling dictates. The thick A-pillars (between the windshield and front windows) are designed to meet federal rollover standards, but their width makes checking for pedestrians and crossing traffic difficult at times; this is common, however, and the Pontiac G8 is the same way. Meanwhile, a glance at the rearview mirror quickly puts to rest any lingering illusions about the Charger being a coupe: the rear window is a long way back. The C-pillars are also fat, and require careful checking of the blind spot during lane changes. In addition, the front of the roof juts out far in front of the seating position, so it can block your view of overhead traffic signals when you get close to the intersection.

The Charger's dashboard is largely plastic. It's mostly sturdy, but it seems cheap for a car that quickly tops $30,000. The instrument cluster arrangement is pleasantly informative. The big, round speedometer and tachometer share the top half of the steering wheel opening, with fuel and coolant temperature gauges down in the left and right corners. The climate controls are conveniently positioned beneath the radio and are easy to operate.

Entertainment features are plentiful. In addition to an AM/FM/CD stereo, buyers can opt for Dodge's UConnect Tunes or UConnect GPS systems. Both have 30 gigabytes of hard drive space (up from 20 gigs last year) to hold music and picture files, but the GPS version also includes a navigation system with real-time traffic and voice activation.

The rear entertainment system installation takes a novel, but well-integrated approach. The screen hides beneath a cover on the front center console when not in use, then pivots up between the front seats for viewing. The interface, for DVD and input and output jacks, is incorporated into the rear of the console beneath the screen and above the rear seat ventilation registers. Without the entertainment system, the center console functions as a traditional storage bin. The system comes with Sirius Backseat TV, which includes three child-oriented channels, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Two headsets are provided, so children in the back can watch the screen, while front occupants can listen to the radio.

SRT8 owners will be entertained by the Reconfigurable Display located in the vehicle information center. It displays what Chrysler calls Performance Pages. This feature can provide readouts of lateral and longitudinal G forces, 1/8- and 1/4-mile time and speed, 0-60 mph time, and braking distance.

Rear-seat room is plentiful, thanks to the long wheelbase, even with the front seats at their rearmost positions. No head restraint for the rear center seat is provided, however, making this car better for four adults than five.

Cubby storage includes a small, horizontal storage bin in the lower portion of the center stack, and there's a similar, longitudinal slot in the console to the right of the shift gate. A bin in the forward-most part of the front center console is large enough for coins and the like. Above it is a small, fold-down drawer where the Smokers Group ashtray would be, and next to that is a power point that would hold the lighter. Two cup holders sit in front of the console bin, and another pair can be found in the forward end of the rear seat center armrest. All four doors have good-sized map pockets, though the front seatbacks lack pouches for reading materials and headsets. The glove box is roomier than many.

The trunk is large. Loading items into the trunk is aided by a comfortably low lift-over height, at 30 inches. The trunk opening is shaped such that it swallows longer objects more readily than large parcels. All models except the base SE get 60/40 split folding rear seatbacks.

We've driven all the Charger models. The 2.7-liter V6 engine is
barely adequate, but all agree it's the most frugal choice, with an
EPA-estimated 18/26 mpg City/Highway.

The 3.5-liter V6 produces 250 horsepower and is EPA rated at 17/24 mpg
City/Highway with rear-wheel drive and 16/23 mpg with all-wheel drive.
When pushed, the big V6 breathes a bit harder than the V8 and requires
more room when passing on crowded two-lanes.

The 5.7-liter V8, updated for 2009, makes the Charger R/T a muscle car.
Horsepower is up from the previous 340 to 368 hp, while torque
increases from 390 to 395 pound-feet. These figures add up to robust
straight-line performance. The 0-60 mph acceleration test drops from
about 6 seconds to the mid-5-second range, a significant increase. The
5.7-liter V8 features Dodge's Multi-Displacement System that conserves
fuel by shutting down four cylinders when they're not needed to
maintain the car's momentum. The system cannot be felt through the seat
of the pants, at least not easily, but it can be monitored. For 2009,
Dodge has added an ECO light in the electronic vehicle information
center to indicate when four cylinders have been shut down.

The 6.1-liter V8 in the SRT8 cuts the 0-60 time to right around 5.0
seconds and provides thrilling passing punch and throttle response.
Rated at 14/20 mpg, the Hemi is saddled with a $1700 Gas Guzzler Tax.

2009 all-wheel-drive models come with Active Transfer Case and
Front-axle Disconnect. When all-wheel drive isn't needed, the system
automatically disconnects the front axle and opens the transfer case to
reduce friction and rotational mass. The system reconnects the axle
whenever AWD is needed, and drivers can opt to stay in AWD by shifting
to AutoStick mode. Another light in the electronic vehicle information
center indicates when the system switches modes. Dodge says Active
Transfer Case and Front-axle Disconnect improves fuel economy by up to
1 mpg on the highway. AWD allows use of the Charger in winter weather
and makes it more stable in heavy rain.

The five-speed AutoStick transmission works equally well in either
Automatic or Manual mode. In Automatic mode, full-throttle upshifts
wait until redline, and downshifts for passing are executed with
minimal delay. In Manual mode, the transmission holds a gear to red
line before shifting (unless you shift sooner manually, of course). By
tromping the gas in manual mode you can force a downshift and it holds
as long as the pedal is held to the floor; ease up ever so slightly,
and the higher gear takes back over, and somewhat abruptly.

The Charger's brake hardware is shared with Mercedes-Benz, but the
software code for the stability program, brake assist and traction
control is written by and for Dodge. Mercedes engineers could learn
something from Dodge. Pedal feel is firm, braking is reassuringly
linear, and there's no perceived interference from the electronic
watchdogs, yielding smooth, controlled stops. We haven't always been
able to say the same about the braking characteristics on some of the
Mercedes models (but they've improved also).

All of the Chargers are good cruisers, comfortably motoring along at
70-80 mph. The Charger is quiet at that speed, with little wind
buffeting or road noise from the SE, SXT, and R/T, which come with 17-
and 18-inch wheels. The 3.5-liter SXT model felt perfectly in its
element on the bumpy highways between Detroit and Michigan
International Raceway. Steering in the SE and SXT models we drove
seemed a bit over-assisted at times, and could have used more on-center
feel.

We drove a Charger along winding, two-lane back roads in southern
Virginia then at Virginia International Raceway near Danville. The
Charger is moderately nose-heavy and understeers when turning into
corners before the electronic stability program steps in; the program's
threshold seems set high enough to allow altering the line through a
corner with deft throttle application. Given its size, it is slow to
react to quick changes of direction, and the driver can really feel the
car shift its weight from side to side.

The R/T Road/Track package comes with fatter, stickier tires
(P235/55R18 Michelin MXM4s), recalibrated steering with better feel
across the speed range, and suspension tweaks that combine to reduce
body lean in corners and quicken turn-in response. A price is paid,
however, as the sportier suspension and tire combination resonates more
over broken pavement, not harshly, but noticeably. Some drivers may
also find the rumbling exhaust note of the Road/Track tiresome over
long distances.

The Super Track Pack makes the Charger even sportier. Thanks to a
higher numerical axle, Dodge says 0-60 time is as low as 5.3 seconds.
Handling is a bit sharper, approaching SRT8 levels of performance,
though the suspension is not quite as firm as the SRT8 suspension.

The SRT8 is the sportiest and fastest Charger. It handles better than a
big car should, but it still feels big. While there is a ride penalty,
we found the SRT8 easy to live with, even on pockmarked Midwestern
streets. Be aware, however, that the lowered ride height calls for care
when parking the SRT8 to avoid scraping the front fascia. That's not
much price to pay for a true muscle car that you can drive every day.

The Dodge Charger delivers pony car excitement and style and
recalls a bygone era, all while providing the roomy accommodations of a
full-size car. The availability of all-wheel drive is a bonus for
customers in the north, and the range of engines and suspension setups
allows buyers to choose between fast and comfortable models. The design
is a little long in the tooth, as challengers from Pontiac and Ford are

that this slick looking '64 ran in a 10.50 index class, Russell's
Polara was the best pick.

From Amanda and I, as well as everyone

        AF HEMI's Information:
I bought this 2003 Ram 1500 QCSB Hemi 4x4 at the end of January 2009 and immediately got attacked by the modding bug. I bought it from the original owner who obviously babied it because it is completely flawless inside and out with less than 25k miles. It has a 6" Fabtech lift with Fox Racing Nitrogen 2.0 shocks on all 4's. The wheels are 17" Chrome Weld Racing wrapped in 35x12.5x17 Procomp X-terrain rubber. I'm using Westin's Black Step Tubes to assist the climb into the cockpit. For performance upgrades I bought it with the typical K&N Cold Air Intake and Magnaflow SI/DO catback exhaust. I was left wanting more power so I looked to Pacesetter for a set of Longtube Headers with 2300 ceramic coating inside and out as well as the Pacesetter off-road y-pipe with 1300 degree coating. A set of Motive 4.56 Gears help get it goin off the line quicker along with an Auburn LSD. The computer is controlled with a Superchips Flashpaq 3815 on 91 Tune. An electric fan with a variable temp controller replaced the stock clutch fan to help keep the engine cool and freed up some ponies as well as some mpgs. A 180 t-stat runs the engine significantly cooler and helps richen up the leaned out A/F ratio from the intake/exhaust/programmer. A set of Hella 500 running lights sittin behind the billet grille help light up the road on dark nights. Towing is done with a Class IV hitch, 7-pin harness (upgraded from factory 4-pin) and a Prodigy P3 Brake Controller. The bed is protected with a Line-X coating and covered with an Access Lorado tonneu. For tunes, It's a 3000w Infinity system controlled with a 7" flip out touch screen with more features than I care to list and you care to read. Immediate future upgrades: Black headlights with HIDs and Angel Eyes, Blacked out taillights/3rd brake light, and Trans Temp gauge. I'm very blessed to own this truck and I appreciate all your support for TOTM. God Bless

HammerZ71s information:
My daily driver, to lessen the accumulated miles on my '04 Hemi 4x4,I bought the '02 Grand Cherokee Overland in the spring of '07.
The vehicle has gone largely un-modded to date, as the Overland package sports a host of upgrades over all other Grand Cherokee models. The only real mods I've added are a drop-in K&N air filter, window vent shades and an Alpine stereo system capable of reading MP3 files along with four Pioneer speakers.
Chief among these upgrades is the 4.7 HO engine, which boasts about 35 more HP and 40 more ft/lbs of torque than the standard 4.7 engine.
Leather interior, real wood accents, adjustable pedals, seat memory, auto lights and wipers, tire pressure monitor, rock rails and an Up-Country suspension round out some of the standard features found in the Overland package.
As far as future mods, I do have a set of 2" coil spacers in my possession which will be going on soon, along with new shocks and a larger set of tires, probably in the 265/70/17 range.

I
owe a lot of the credit for this truck to my wife. My first mod was a
catback that she bought me as a surprise less than two weeks after I
brought the truck home! From the very beginning , she was gung ho about
a lift and tires and it was less than a year before I had a 2" front
level and a 3" body lift installed with Dick Cepek DC-1 rims, and
FunCountry II 35's. My wife saw the topper on another truck and told me
how great it looked. I assured her that nobody made a "frameless"
topper and that she just didn't get a good look at it. We argued about
it for three weeks until I finally saw one... I still haven't heard the
end of that! Recon cab and tail lights round out the exterior along
with an SRT hood, pocket flares, custom badging, Hellas behind the
grill, and modified 2500 tow hooks. My wife is real big about the
exterior mods, but my heart is under the hood. I have a custom ground
torque cam fed by a Vararam intake and a ported throttle body. It
breathes via a set of Edelbrock headers, a Magnaflow Y pipe, and a
Gibson catback dumped at the rear axle. It's all kept cool with a Viper
shroudless efan and a 180 tstat. Tuning is handled via a Diablo
Predator and a (newly added) Dynojet Wideband Commander air fuel gauge.
Inside, the family is entertained by a Kenwood DDX512 double din nav
unit with an additional 10" flip down dvd screen in the rear. Future
mods include more lift, more performance, leather interior, and a
custom front end conversion. Special thanks to my wife for all of her
support getting the truck where it is and where it is going!

MOPWR2U's information:
Purchased new in Sept. 2008, at Lunt Motor Co, in Cedar City, UT. Lunt Motor Co has been in business for 75 years, with Dodge being the only brand they sell. Current owners: Mitch Lunt, and his son Jim Lunt, are both excellent people to work with if you need a new Dodge. I gaurantee you will get a fair price.

The Dodge Challenger is the car I have wanted for the last 30 years. I could never afford one 30 years ago, and I did not have the mechanical skill or time required to restore one of the originals. So as soon as I saw the Challenger concept I knew I would be buying one. Having the satelite radio pre-set on the classic rock station for the test drive sealed the deal, when Brian Adam's song "Summer of '69" came on it was like I had stepped into a time machine, and had gone back 30 years to a better less stressfull time. $40,000 is a fair amount of money for a car, but it is dirt cheap for a time machine, so I bought the Challenger.

This Challenger has been the most satisfying vehicle purchase I have ever made. Everything about this car is high quality, and leaves me with a sense of satisfaction when I drive the car. The power is great, handling is great, fit and finish is top notch. Sound suppression is superb, and there is no wind noise at any legal speed. The seats are very comfortable, the dash layout is just right, and even the stereo is a quality item.

I've owned several nice vehicles over the years, but this Challenger is the best of the best. Dodge needs to be congratulated on a job well done.

The Production Challenger

The 2008 Dodge Challenger is offered in one trim
line, the well-known SRT8 designation. There were 4 choices for the
lucky people who reserved a 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 before it was
released. The first dealt with color, either Hemi Orange Pearl Coat,
Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat, or Bright Silver Metallic Pearl
Coat. The second choice was whether to stick with the basic 6-disc
AM/FM/MP3 stereo system or to select the $890 MyGig Multimedia system
complete with GPS navigation. The third option was whether or not you
wanted a sunroof at an additional $950. And the final decision was
simple: stock or performance tires. The base tire of the SRT8 is a set
of four 245/45ZR20 all-season Goodyear radials. For fifty dollars more,
a buyer could select a set of performance Goodyears with the same 245
size tires up front and 255/45ZR20's in the rear.

Engine

Much like the SRT8 variant of the 2008 Dodge
Charger and 2008 Chrysler 300C, the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 comes
equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission backing a 425
horsepower, 6.1L version of the legendary Hemi engine. There was much
speculation about what trimline designation the production models would
wear compared to what engine since the 6.1L Hemi had not been in
anything other than SRT8 models, although the concept was badged as an
R/T model. Many people were hoping that the new Challenger would come
with a manual transmission, as that is one of the most common
complaints about the Dodge Charger, but the manual gearbox would not be
available until the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 model. The 5-speed
transmission does feature the Auto-Stick (referred to by some as being
a clutchless manual) function, which allows the driver to select gears
electronically with just a push of the shifter; this provides the
convenience of an automatic transmission with some of the fun of a
manual. The power from the engine is funneled through the transmission
and down the driveshaft into a 3.06 ratio rear end fitted with a
Sure-Grip limited slip differential to help the Challenger make use of
all 425 ponies. Based on what was seen from the other SRT8 cars, the
Challenger SRT8 should be capable of 12 second quarter mile times. And
though the new Challenger was tested in the 13.1 range based on high
trap speeds, traction was the biggest factor harming those quarter mile
times.

Handling

The
braking system is also similar to that found in other SRT8 sedans, a
full Brembo brake kit featuring huge aluminum calipers wrapped around
slotted 360mm brake rotors in the front and 350mm rotors in the rear.
These are kept cool via ducts mounted in the front fascia. Helping to
handle the turns, the SRT8 suspension is made for the road but tuned
for the track. This allows for a near perfect blend of a comfortable
ride and quality cornering abilities. The front suspension is a long
and short arm design, and a multilink independent suspension in the
rear helps to keep the best tire surface area on the ground under hard
cornering. Those aforementioned 20 inches are fitted onto a set of
SRT-designed aluminum rims, powder coated silver with a polished lip
flowing down the middle of each of the five spokes to the raised "ram's
head" logo on the wheel center cap.

Do

The Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Mustang are two of a handful of American
performance cars that have secured their place in automotive history
books. They both contributed to building the young performance market
in 50's and 60's America, and then passed the test of time. The Pontiac
Firebird, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Thunderbird, and Dodge Charger can
also be counted amongst the most powerful cars of their day, though
presently the Firebird is no longer produced and the Charger is offered
as a performance sedan. Ford Muscle returned to classic styling with
the release of the S197 2005 Mustang, a mega success. Around the same
time, rumors of another vintage muscle car returning began to grow;
this time for the Dodge Challenger.

The original 1970-1974 Dodge Challenger was only built for 4 years
until it returned as a Mitsubishi-built compact car, but made its
lasting impact on the performance world and is still among the most
desired Mopar muscle cars. The popularity of the original Dodge
Challenger, along with Dodge enthusiasts' pleads for a muscle car coupe
to battle the Mustang, led Dodge to design a concept along the same
line of retro styling. The 2006 Dodge Challenger Concept was released
to the world at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in
Detroit, Michigan where it stole the show. Over the next six months,
the market was abuzz as internet forums and blogs raved over the new
Challenger.

Early on, there was no clear proof that the Dodge Challenger would ever
be produced; gradually increasing fuel prices provided classic Mopar
fans further consternation. Then in late June 2006, an exciting
announcement featuring NASCAR legend Richard Petty proclaimed that the
Challenger was "A-Go". With that it was official, but Dodge would be
very vague about what would change from concept to production and what
options might be offered.

After two years of waiting, conversing, and bickering about "what could
be", and spotting test mules around the Detroit Metro area and at car
shows around the US, the public got a whiff of the new Dodge Challenger
production model when it debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show on
February 6, 2008. A spread of three cars drew nearly everyone's
attention at the show, with the Orange Challenger sitting atop the
display and a Silver Challenger and Black Challenger sitting on the
sides, all SRT8 models. Two long years of rumor and speculation ended
with the specifications release for the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8.

Do you guys remember the build up leading up to the Challenger's return? Like an indomitable storm, the Formula Drift Series descended upon the streets of downtown Long Beach this past weekend for round 1 of the 2009 season, bringing with it the thunder of Team Mopar's tire-destroying Dodge Viper SRT10 drift car to a crowd of more than 40,000 fans. Also making an appearance was the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 drift car, giving fans a preview of things to come later in the season. Now entering its 5th season, the Formula Drift Series has grown exponentially in just a short period of time and has been a key player in exposing drifting to the U.S.

Dodge has been heavily involved in the Formula Drift Series since its
inception, entering such cars as the Charger SRT8, Viper SRT10
and Viper Competition Coupe. While "Ma Mopar" has had some success with
its Charger drift car, the team always seems to gravitate towards the
tried and true Viper when it needs a win. Samuel "The Crazy Swede"
Hubinette drove the SRT10 to a 2nd place finish at Long Beach, his 13th
podium finish in the series.
While the judges deemed that Hubinette was outperformed in the final
match, there should be no question about which was the superior car.
With its Paxton-supercharged 8.3-liter V10, this super snake puts down
an incredible 825 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque. To make sure
this power is transferred to the pavement, a staggered set of 18x10
(front) and 18x13 (rear) wheels are utilized. But even the massive
345/35ZR18 BF Goodrich G-Force T/A tires in the rear could not keep
this Viper from sliding when throttle was applied.
The Viper makes for an incredible platform to build a drift vehicle on,
but the SRT10's reign cannot last forever; Hubinette will pilot a
Challenger SRT8 for the remainder of the season. Debuting at Road
Atlanta in May, time will tell if this new chassis can maintain Mopar's
legacy of heavy-hitting drift machines.

- Alex Nishimoto

Was anyone able to attend this event and catch the near dominance of the Viper? came the flares to tame the mud getting thrown from them and a set of

it more of a meaner look. after that i moved on to some engine mods to
get them big ol tires movin . CAI hooked straight to the TB, 180

then i move into the cab i built a custom box for 2 ten inch kenwoods
and threw a kicker amp on them and a new head unit along with a CB ,
husky floor mats and cabelas seat covers. now after all that there are
a few other things to add but the one im waiting on from UPS is my air
bags . now that will be nice.
future mods are in the works 3"pa body lift and black rims
had 71,300 miles on it (now has almost 76K). Besides the wheels and
tires, I replaced the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, both hard brake
lines (needs shoes now), and the water pump. I've repaired the vacuum
wiper motors and lines. Still need to replace the rubber window seals
and channels. Want to make new door panels, replace the headliner, and
reupholster the seat. Last July, I blew the head gasket, so I replaced
the tired '50 engine with a rebuilt '52 flathead 6 (218 cu in @97 hp).
I plan to rebuild the old engine this year (.60 over, 230 crank and
rods, shaved head .60, and dual 2 barrels). it still has the original 3
speed (non-syncro) floor shift and 3.90 rear.it has a single bench seat
(no rear seat), huge trunk (spare ride in cab behind passenger). Front
windshield cranks open (factory air). Even has original 1937 license
plates. I put over 1200 miles on last summer just going to local cruise
nites and shows. It's a driver, not a trailer queen. It is assumed by some that the General Lee 1969 Dodge Charger in The Dukes of Hazzard was equipped with the 426 Hemi, but it was never stated nor implied. Exact numbers are not known, but the majority of the 309 General Lee's were packed with the 383 big block; many of the engine shots during the show revealed the 383. Deemed "close up cars", Chargers carrying the 383 were kept in better condition than those used for chase scenes. There were some designated with the 440 big block for long distance jumps and other high speed maneuvers, although many of the jump cars were powered by 318 cubic inch engines that weighed less. During those jump scenes, the rear of the cars would be packed with lead weights as heavy as 1000 pounds to prevent the car from nosing down on its landing. Almost all of the cars used during the jump scenes were destroyed on impact, as the incredible amount of weight added to the rear often caused them to fold in half. Even the very first General Lee, named LEE 1, was jumped in one episode and then wrecked in a later episode before being towed to an Atlanta area junkyard. Later, it was purchased and fully restored by Travis Bell.

The General Lee Charger was equipped with a Chrysler 727 Torqueflite
transmission, although some believe that it was a manual due to some
sound bites used during the series. And it is rumored that there were a
handful of manual transmission models.

The throaty exhaust of the General Lee Dodge began as stock exhaust
systems with the rear portion cut off. With more strict emissions
standards in California, the cars used for the west-coast filmed
episodes had either a fully modified exhaust system, or a stock system
that was dubbed over. The "close-up cars" used in the seasons two thru
5 featured Blackjack brand headers, full dual exhaust, and Thrush
"Glass Pack" mufflers, but even the models with the improved exhaust
systems had their sounds augmented during editing.

The Rebirth of the General Lee?

The Dukes of Hazzard returned as a movie in 2005, but this star-studded
rebirth did not prove to be a popular one. Many Dukes enthusiasts were
unhappy with the amount of sexual content in the movie, a view
supported by the original "Cooter", Ben Jones. Of note, the show was
bashed by critics in the US, although it ended up doing fairly well
worldwide. One aspect the movie got right was the bright orange 1969
Dodge Charger, proudly displaying the Confederate flag and the infamous
01. Even with a cast that included Jessica Simpson (Daisy Duke), Willie
Nelson (Uncle Jessie), Burt Reynolds (Boss Hogg), and Johnny Knoxville
(Luke Duke), as well as the General Lee in all of its glory could not
help the movie.

Though the 2005 movie showed poorly, The Dukes of Hazzard remains very
popular among Mopar enthusiasts. At any decent Mopar event or show, you
are sure to see at least one or two quality General Lee reproductions;
there is even one touring the eastern US that rides on a four wheel
drive chassis. The General Lee name has become one of the most famous
cars ever; with the return of the 2009 Dodge Charger to the new car
lineup from Chrysler, modern day renditions of the General Lee built on
the current sedan platform have become popular, thus securing a
continuation of the legend.

Everyone knows the General Lee Charger. What are your memories of the car, the show, and wanting to make your Charger whistle Dixie? How did The Dukes of Hazzard remake sit with you?

Part 1 of this article.
The American muscle car scene created a handful of legendary cars such
as the Chevrolet Camaro, the Dodge Challenger, and the Ford Mustang.
40+ years later, those high performance street machines are still
highly sought after. Not only do collectors pounce on the chance to own
the vehicles, the entertainment industry has featured them prominently
in movies and television as well: the 1976 Ford Gran Torino on Starsky
& Hutch or the 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am in Smokey and the
Bandit. Those cars are well known and often replicated, but no movie or
television vehicle has stolen the hearts of gearheads the way a 1969 Dodge Charger named General Lee did when it roared through every episode of The Dukes of Hazzard.

The Dukes of Hazzard debuted in 1979, based on a 1975 movie, The Moonrunners. Creator Gy Waldron used a similar close-knit family of free spirited moonshiners, with the key development idea to feature the Dukes boys using a race prepared 1969 Dodge Charger to evade the long arm of the law. There was much deliberation over the look of the General Lee (the name actually preceded the car itself), but the bright orange paint, confederate flag on the roof, and unusual 01 on the doors proved to be a good choice, as the legendary scheme is often copied by would-be collectors. The most common scene in the show's 147 episodes featured Bo (John Schneider) and Luke (Tom Wopat) tearing along unpaved country roads and soaring across unfinished bridges, which Hazzard County, Georgia seemed to have plenty of.

A few details of this fabled muscle car are well-known to fans: the
doors of the 1969 Dodge Charger were welded shut (actually false) and
that there was a padded roll bar between the front and rear seats. A
fact many do not know is that there was not one General Lee Charger,
but 309 of them. The first five episodes of the show used 6 Chargers,
and repairs were made after each filming to keep them looking good
enough to use. But after that, Warner Brothers knew that a great many
more General Lee's would be needed for this popular show. The 2nd,
3rd, and 4th season cars were produced by Andre and Renaud Valuzet, who
were also responsible for producing the police and chase vehicles
during those seasons. After the 4th season, Ken Fritz produced some of
the General Lee's because the Valuzet's were caught selling damaged
cars from past episodes to the public. However, Fritz was fired after
only a short time and Warner Brothers ordered all modifications to the
vehicles be done in-house.

One of the most popular aspects of the General Lee Dodge Charger is the
horn that plays the first 12 notes in the song Dixie; no replica is
complete without the familiar tune. Along with the Confederate flag on
the roof, the look and sound of the General Lee remained popular with
those residing in the southern United States as a sign of "rebel
heritage". The background behind the tune is interesting; this key
feature was not considered during the planning of the series. While on
location, the production crew encountered a group of teenagers driving
along a back road that honked as they passed, their horn blared Dixie.
The production crew was so taken by this that they turned around and
followed the kids until they stopped. After being shown how the horn
worked, the crew members offered larger and larger sums of money until
the owner of the car agreed to remove the horn for the members of the
show staff.

Everyone
knows the General Lee Charger. What are your memories of the car, the
show, and wanting to make your Charger whistle Dixie?

some body mods and paint to include racing stripes. I have a few more
exterior mods to do, a drop and some light mods, then I am going after
the drive train. If all goes well I am planning on putting in a stroker
426 Hemi, performance transmission, Dana rear, and a big brake upgrade
when she's paid off. I bought her back in 05 new and have been working
on the exterior over the past few years. She's a project in the works
and I plan on keeping her for a while. She is a high mileage daily
driver and has performed quite well. I have been driving Mopars since
'78 and she's one of my favorites.

I appreciate the jester and now, a little about myself.

I am 44 years old and live in the Chicago land suburb of Coal City. I
am a fabricator. This is the reason I have a few one off customs on my
Magnum. I first noticed the new Magnums in late 2004. I did my research
on them and decided to order a new 2005 Magnum R/T. So, on January 29th
2005, I try to place my order, but it was too late to order a '05 model
already. I was then told I could order a 2006 magnum in a few weeks, so
I waited. Then on February 15th, 2005, I placed my order for the first
2006 Magnum R/T. Since custom orders are considered sold, they have
build priority and my magnum was the very first 2006 built on March 23,
2005 and delivered on April 8th 2005.

My very first modification was removing all the emblems and side
moldings. I did this in the first ten minutes after I got home from the
dealer. I have since blacked out the windows, lowered it 2.5 inches,
added a custom chin spoiler, made a custom formed mesh grill, added a
Hurst shifter and Katzkin interior, tried four different camshafts
until I found the one I have now, swapped the heads for some custom
heads, full exhaust, custom computer work, fabricated a true fresh
ram-air intake system, added some AAR 'Cuda stripes, 20" Boyd
Coddington wheels, custom ram-air hood, fabricated my own rear spoiler,
and finally welded up the rear gate handle, wiper hole, door handles
and side glass.

Right now, it has the power, sound, and look I want. Remember, there
were no SRT magnums when I ordered mine. I also have another magnum and
a new challenger. Thanks again to all that voted for me.
I got the car in 2005 bone stock. i slowly started by modding it by
adding tint then i went to suspension with H&R springs and srt-4
swaybars and then some Kazera 17" rims. Then i went more into the
exterior of my car by doing an 03 rear conversion. Performance mods
came next. The major performance mod is Mag camshaft swap. Everything
that i do to my car is my own choice. i like the way it looks and no
one else can change that.
